What is Cross Country like?

My child plays winter and spring sports pretty seriously and adores their XC season. Nicest kids, great sport.

My shy, kinda quirky 12 year old nephew who always HATED team sports just discovered XC in 7th grade and LOVES it. He is actually really really good and really enjoys the fact that he is mostly competing with himself.

To initially make the team, students need to be able to run 2 miles in under 15 minutes, and they expect that their time will drop to 2 miles in under 14 minutes within the first month on the team.

Our FCPS HS doesn't cut Everyone is accepted (especially those who didn't make the cut for the other winter sports).
The caveat is you must show up to 5x/day week practice/stay the whole time/meets, etc You can't just come & go as you feel like.

The great thing about running if you do this - you WILL get better. I ran cross-county starting my sophomore year after playing a different sport in 9th grade. By the next year, I was the team captain, we were one of the best teams in the city, and several of us qualified for the state meet. ONE person had been a runner before high school.

XC is a great sport. My only complaint is the 5:45 am practices we had to get DS to M-Th, then the early morning meets on Saturdays. I’m complaining here bc I can’t whine about this to my kid who gladly pops out of bed for practice and races.

Yup. My DD who sleeps and and was not a runner before freshman year was always up before I was waiting for me on the couch at the crack of dawn. I was amazed. She loved it. And it was great it started in august before school began so she could meet another kids.
