I currently have 150 hours of vacation leave and 70 hours of sick leave. I’m capped at both and will be spending down this month.

I'm FINALLY hitting 240 the first pay period of 2022, after many years of taking just a week in the summer, the day after Thanksgiving, and a week at Christmas off all year. Should I try to keep it near the cap? Why? If I ever leave the feds, that's a lot of time I'll never get back.

Because there is no employer provided short term disability insurance for Feds. I have seen so many long term fed colleagues wipe through hundreds of hours of accrued leave due to illness of themselves or a loved one.

Yes, I used my max carryover for maternity leave. Now with 2 little kids, I can barely keep 2 weeks in the bank.

zero. We have unlimited vacation but can't carry over, if that makes sense.

Yep! Get a new job. 5 days isn’t normal unless you’re a teacher or someone who already gets a lot off.

230.54 but I will be cashing out max of 35 hours, and then I will be going to visit Argentina for 3 weeks in March.

Do people abuse it?

We have 160 hr. max of leave which carries over, but if you are at the max you can't earn more. We also get 16 hrs personal and 80hrs sick which don't carry but everyone starts the year with those full, you don't have to earn them.

I generally have at least 100 hrs in reserve.

Why would you need to carry over if there is no set amount.

Yes, this. One bad diagnosis or accident can burn through a ton of leave in no time.
