Deal basketball tryouts

No we don’t need need more schools. We need better boundaries. There are new schools in DC at only 50% capacity like brookland middle! DCPS needs to create real academic magnet schools.

Deal has capacity for what 1400-1500 students. No matter how you draw the lines, it’s always going to be a huge school and be very hard to make cut sports teams. There are plenty of non cut options for students or they can play recreationally. No matter what, Deal bball for boys is not guaranteed to be a top bball team. The bulk of City bball talent is just not upper NW.

Geez, there should be a team for each grade. Basketball teams only carry about 10 on a roster. Deal should have a chance to do really well with the number of students it has to pull from. Middle school hoops is the best!

Why do you even say that? There are probably plenty of good bball players who go to deal and newsflash: they might come from other parts of the city, too because of the lottery.

maybe only 40 girls tried out b/c they were told their was only going to be 1 team? Title ix says not OK

So is title 9 about girls’ feelings or facts? I think they can explain the plans. Clearly, not as many girls want to play so of course it makes sense to have fewer teams.

I don’t know about Deal, but this was clearly the case at Wilson. Three boys teams, 100 kids at both varsity and JV tryouts, but they had trouble getting enough girls to field a team (according to DC).

Because I know the DC middle school bball scene very well. Deal has 1-2 AAU type players (and you’re right, one is OOB) and Jefferson, for example, has 5-6.

For the 10th time, there will be one boy team and one girl team. This is a result of DC sports scene via DCIAA, not Deal. Things are even worse for baseball. There is zero competitive teams in DC for baseball. It will be 100 boys try out and the only school that will field close to a competitive team will be Hardy. Most games will be canceled or forfeited.

Deal may actually have a chance this year in bball given the vaccine mandate. I’m interested to see how it plays out.

In case people didn’t see this update in bulletin. Pretty cool alternative.
