+1 We love the k-8 model. We have a lot of faith that if our kids do well at their k-8 they will get into a competitive HS. And if our kids don’t do well, then a very academic high school is probably not the best place for them. |
No. What you are saying is “OP, I know you say you like the K-8 model, but if you really care about HS placement, then you shouldn’t like the K-8 model.” That’s both irrelevant and inane, you’re just arguing with OP. It’s possible to love K-8 and also want a sense of how a particular K-8 will prepare your child for the next step. For us, we knew that Norwood would do an amazing job of preparing our kids for high school, this is something that we definitely looked into and thought about when we were applying. But not because we were already focused on a specific high school or group of them when our kid was in K. That would be contrary to the model and what we loved about K-8 in the first place. |
Yeah...I’m “speculating” about my own child, based on a lived experience of seeing them in LS and MS at a k-8, and knowing exactly how they grew, matured, and changed during those formative years. The horror!

OK Norwood booster. We hear you. No one said to dislike the K-8 model. But, there's realistic advice, since OP is obviously concerned about getting her kid into a top HS, about the K-12 model. Guess what? You like like both models. You don't need to choose one or the other. You can apply to both. You can like both. |
Sometimes Lowell does well at GDS, though the past year was extremely tough. Lowell sends a lot of kids to Burke, St. Johns and Sandy Springs. |

I just don’t understand why you feel the need to be a busybody and tell OP that they shouldn’t like K-8s when they started the discussion by stating that they do like K-8s. OMG do you not read? No one is saying people shouldn't like K-8s. No one. People are suggesting that OP consider K-12s in addition to K-8s. Do you not understand that people can and do apply to both types of schools? Because both have their strengths and weaknesses? |

None of them can claim amazing placements last year unless the kid was a sibling applicant, or legacy, etc.
luck of the draw if your kid is in a cohort or not with sibling applicants applying to same HS. The siblings get preferential admissions every time. Even at schools that claim otherwise. |

Clearly, you want to talk about a different subject and not the one that OP asked about. I'm sorry that you had to resort to a K-8 solely because your kid didn't get into a Big 3 for K, and then you were disappointed later on with placement options from the K-8. Taught for 10 years at one of those K-8 schools and it really depends on the kid as much as the school. HS placement is much more competitive in recent years but it should be about getting your child placed in a school that is their best fit, not the most elite, etc. I’m married to a HS private school teacher and you wouldn’t believe the amount of grade inflation and edited letters of recommendation that come out of these K-8’s! I agree it would be more realistic to transfer from another k-12 or 3-12 school where there business model isn’t selling used goods. K-8 schools are

I’m not OP, but I think the biggest takeaway from this discussion is that it is a mistake for someone to ever hope to get good information or advice from DCUM.
OP, good luck! Hopefully you know or can get introduced to some families with children at those schools, who might be able to give you some good insight and advice. |
