Neighborhoods in Long Island

Certainly Westchester has its appeal (certainly seems more easy to manage coming from DC) but have heard good things about the Long Island public school system and also wondering if living ON Long Island would allow us to test into the NYC magnet school system down the road without actually having to live IN the city. Long Island seems a little more diverse than Westchester (but maybe I'm completely mistaken) and this is important to us as well. Our budget is roughly 1m but could likely go a little higher.

We'll look into some of the areas that have been suggested. What are the differences between North and South Great Neck? Thanks again to everyone who offered helpful advice. Really appreciate it.

No way would you want to subject your kids to a school commute from Long Island to the city

I grew up in Manhattan, which is also an island. No one says “I grew up on Manhattan.” My father lives in Oahu. Same thing about another island. This issue shows just how insular LI really is.

yeah and for New Yorkers it has always been the butt of the joke. who actually MOVES there? I thought people just escaped it for better places to live!

Yep. And the people who stay long term are very insular seeming. Ick. The only way I'd live on LI is if I lived in Queens or Brooklyn.

When I was a kid I dreamed of moving to Bellerose Terrace. No idea what it’s like now, but that’s all I’ve got.

That's because you lived IN the borough of Manhattan. Which is located ON Manhattan Island. So stupid.

You might be the first person in the history of the world to ever dream of moving to the Terrace.

I grew up in Coram. Anywhere but there.

OP, Long Island isn't one big school district. Every town or two has its own school district. Smithtown/Huntington has one, Syosset/Woodbury has one, Plainview/Old Bethpage has one, etc. Great Neck is one school district (two sides, North and South) as is Jericho.

And I've never heard of anyone on LI being allowed to go to magnet schools in the city (are you thinking of Bronx Science or LaGuardia?).

My brother on his first day of kindergarten described the only non-white boy in his grade as "chocolate". There's a sliver of the school district that dips into a neighboring town and that's where the POC came from.

Commack here. I agree, BUT, while I wouldn't refer to Commack as "diverse", the small diversity we did have, we were all friends. I was naive about the struggles of growing up as a POC, because my black friends were all UMC.

Westchester, north shore of nassau, nice NJ burbs....all basically the same. The local school district drives everything...spends a fortune per pupil and the education is excellent if your kid wants to work. High property taxes pay for it all.

Agreed with all of this. You need to get school district and town specific. One school district on LI for example could be amazing and 1.5 miles down the road it totally sucks.

how is garden city these days? was super beautiful, cute downtown, great schools. train is right there
great neck is closer to the city...there are many nice pockets. A lot of the cost has to do with how easy the commute is to manhattan...

Garden City is still great, though I wouldn't necessarily recommend it for OP as GC is probably the most conservative UMC town in NYC's most conservative suburb (Long Island).

OP -- do you have family on Long Island? Why are you looking there vs New Jersey?
