Internships

Finance, tech, consulting, accounting, Big Biz.

In that order.

Summer 2019: Finance internship with Democratic Party of [State] (fundraising, event planning, donor research) -- $15/hour
Fall 2019: Legislative internship with a state rep in her college state -- $10/hour
Summer and fall 2020: Campaign organizing intern for Joe Biden campaign and other Democratic candidates in college state - $15/hour
Summer 2021: public policy intern with big corporation in DC area, $25/hour

It takes a little more digging to find paid ones than say, the engineering field, but they are absolutely out there.

It’s easier if you got your foot in the door pre-pandemic.

Huh, she got these 100% on her own or through connections?

The major is the problem

Every Ivy grad I know who had a career in finance studied government, lit, a foreign language, or comp sci. I know one guy who studied Art History at Harvard undergrad and ended up with a great finance career.

Lots of liberal arts grads at Ivies go on to finance and consulting. The companies don't care, they just want the pedigree of you being an Ivy undergrad. Foreign companies/clients love that crap.

They do. But kids have to actually do their part and show up for info sessions, interviews, etc

COVID has made internships a sh!t show.

Not really, they were just all virtual last summer.

Every single solitary internship was virtual last year, really? How about 2020?

Are people this stupid?

The people saying internships where a shtshow are just saying that because their kid didn’t get one. There were students working in every industry and for all top firms. Yes, many were virtual, but the students that would normally secure an internship did so.

Have to agree with the PP. DS secured an internship summer of 2020 just after COVID hit as a high school junior. He worked in software development, entirely remote from his room. He was invited back this past summer, worked mostly virtual, only went to the office 2 or 3 times. He is looking forward to going back next summer.

I’m sure all the college students went to high school internships. 😳
