Dog-walking etiquette

Anonymous wrote:How far do dog owners let their dog poop in other people's yard. If their dog is at the edge of the sidewalk and people's front yard, do they let the dog poop there? How about when their dog walk closer to the house/plant area away. How about when the owner is sitting there, is it rude to have the owner say, 'hey, don't let your dog sh*t in my yard.'

One side of the sidewalk is the green area towards the street. And the other side of the sidewalk is the green area towards the house. Which side is it ok to let your dog poop on?

It is not rude for someone to tell you not to let your dog poop on their property. The very edge of the lawn is the only acceptable place. The swale between the sidewalk and the road is better.

1. Always use a leash, keep my dog close
2. Always pick up poop immediately after my dog finishes business and dump it in a public trash container or my own trash can
3. Do not let my dog run up to or jump on people
4. Do not let my dog approach other dogs while they are eliminating
5. Keep meet and sniff brief when others approach my dog

All good, except for the bolded.

np Sorry dude but, I am going to continue to place the poop in a public trash can. There is no law against it and it is unreasonable to expect dog walkers to put all their poop in their trash can ( especially when walking far from home)

Every vet and dog trainer told me not to get extendable leashes!

You can dump poop in a public trash container, don't listen to this person.

Oh, you're one of those people. Got it.

Dp IT IS A PUBLIC TRASH CAN! That is what they are there for!

Why are retractable leashes bad?
Why is it bad to dispose poop bags in a public trash bin at the park?

Many Veterinarians can tell you horror stories from the ER of dogs that have gotten away and seriously injured when they’ve pulled loose or the pin has disengaged from a retractable leash.

No clue why people are opposed to placing poop bags in public trash cans though.

+1. This is usually one of the first things vets and trainers share with dog owners.

The courts won’t see it that way.

Ah yes all those court cases throwing the book at puppies who jump up on people.

God the drama.

My old neighbor was sued by someone who had been jumped on by their dog. She wasn't petting the dog at the time, but anyway she fell, broke her leg and successfully sued to have her bills paid.

Anonymous wrote:Thanks OP! I'd add keep your dog on your right hand side. That way opposing "traffic" or people passing you don't get close to your dog, and if they do, you're in the middle.

The whole "train your dogs on your left thing" is likely leftover from the British hound training. Doesn't apply to busy pedestrian areas in America.

Makes sense. Thank you!

Yes! I walk my dogs on the right, too. The left side never made sense to me in an urban setting especially.

Which is fine, but be aware that people who are familiar with dog training convention will expect dogs to heel to the left, so plan accordingly when hiring a dog walker or approaching other people walking their dogs

My dogs all heel and walk on my left. Do you also mount your horse from the right??

Some of the most trainable dogbreeds (working dogs) are unsuitable for novice dog owners. This includes German Shepherds, Rottweilers, Akitas, Dobermans, etc. All very smart and highly trainable, but should not be anyone's first dog.

Dogs on the left makes zero sense - it's an antiquated and nonsensical training tool. Do you live in the UK?

My trainer wanted to train to the left and I refused. I have more control with my right arm.

+1 Exactly. Not dumping poop in a public trash bin is crazy town.

Well aren't you a delicate little flower. If it's too difficult to carry a 4 oz poop bag, maybe you aren't equipped to have a dog. Or really, function in society.

That’s awesome! There is actually a county ordinance in moco dealing with unwanted contact from a dog. The dogs owner can be fined anywhere between 1-500 depending on how many times it’s happened.
