Any comments on Ashburton Elementary?

Anonymous
We are new to the area and our daughter will be starting kindergarten next fall. If we go the public school route, she will be at Ashburton...any thoughts/comments/reviews about the school? Everything I have read so far is quite dated (e.g. from 2009).

Thanks for your help and appreciate the honesty about the good/bad/ugly

Wonderful school!! The kids are happy and you can feel the positive energy the moment you walk in. Wonderful open door feel, enthusiastic principal, and a fantastic school counselor who all the kids adore.

Just be aware of overcrowding. According to this site http://www.schooldigger.com/go/MD/schools/0048000776/school.aspx (click the students tab), it went from 632 to 732 in one year. And then according to this year's Schools at a Glance it is up to 794 after only one more year: http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/regulatoryaccountability/glance/currentyear/schools/02425.pdf

At that rate it will get huge very soon.

The projections have it going past 800 and then sliding back down over the next few years after that. I wouldn't worry too much about it in kindergarten though. The student-teacher ratio is not affected by "overcrowding," it just means the school has a lot of portables. They probably stick upper grades in portables, not K or 1st. Not a deal-breaker, imo, if everything else is great.

+2, I have a kid there in PEP. Really impressed with the principal and there is a good, involved PTA. I think there are plans for an addition in the future.

My DD is finishing up K this year. The school is a wonderful community. We were concerned with class size (26 in K), but the teacher has done an amazing job and truly has catered to individual needs. DD's reading ability has soared! (Math seems to get a real backseat in the K curriculum, but, hey, it's only K.)

Love it, love it! Have been impressed by the teachers and the school community, as whole. Was worried about the size, but it hasn't effected our kids experiences at all.

What interactions did you have with her? We are also in PEP and don't see her much.
