Pet Rat Breeder?

Anonymous
We've decided to get kiddo a pet rat. We have all the supplies (which kiddo bought with money from doing chores). We're hoping to find someone who keeps/breeds rats as pets. Buying a feeder rat from a chain pet store is less than optimal.

Any leads? Anybody out there with a pet that had a surprise litter? We are in MD just outside of DC, but are willing to travel.

The local animal shelters have them. Wouldn't it be quicker/easier to get one from there?

Possibly quicker/easier, yes. And I'm usually the one suggesting shelters for those seeking cats/dogs. Thing is, rats don't live very long under the best of circumstances (3ish years). I want kiddo's first pet to be with us as long as possible. Also, rats are far more friendly if they've grown up being handled and cared for as pets from the start. An older rat with an unknown background isn't the pet we're looking for. If it were for me and not kiddo, I'd adopt in a heartbeat.

I'm sure you'd prefer something ridiculous like DS/DD, right? There are hundreds of other threads. Troll elsewhere.

People that buy their children pet rats should save the time and money and just build their family a bunker in the ground with an air pipe sticking out of the ground. I could alert the media for them if they like.

NP. Also so sick of "kiddo". It's beat to death on Capitol Hill.

I guess Dear Larla won't be getting her pet rat anytime soon.
