My kids are 5 and 3. Do you wish now you had done the state prepaid college fund? |
We bought the VA prepaid contracts and they gave us tremendous peace of mind as the kids grew up. Now, even with DD1 at an out of state college, it's very nice to direct the VA fund to pay DD's tuition bill. |
Nope. We did the state 529. Historically it has had a higher rate of return (although we all know that past performance is no guarantee of future performance), and it's just as transferable. |
We did the regular 529 and its fine. We had just about enough saved to fully fund college for kid 1, about 80% for kid 2, but don't anticipate any problems covering full tuition at private colleges. In fact kid 1 was in private high school so our expenses went down when we started using 529 funds to pay college tuition. |
NP with some piggyback questions: Did you do a 529 in your home state or elsewhere? Did you do a 529 in the state where your DC wound up going to college? |
I read some articles about what happened with the Illinois prepaid plan and vowed only to do the regular investment plan.
I like to control things...as much as I can; and felt the prepaid plan was a little too out of my control. |
