European style open shower/wet room

Anonymous
Does anyone have an open shower/wet room style bathroom? That is where the shower is seamlessly part of the tiled bathroom and doesn't have a door, wall or curtain separating it off.

How does it work for you? Is it cold? Does the water splashing cause a problem? We're looking at this as an option for a very small bathroom (also one that likely won't be used that frequently). Also interested in opinions from others.

No one? If it's not clear what I'm describing here's a picture:

Reminds me of a gym shower or prison shower.

That looks awful and reminds me of my childhood trips to India (where all my extended family lived) and how what I hated the most about the trips was not the 100 or even 110+ heat but the bathrooms -- with these kind of showers and ceramic holes in the ground instead of toilets. Things have changed now so no need to bash India but, anyways, your picture provoked flashbacks.

I asked this question on apartment therapy under the pseudonym Carina. You can go search their site. I got lots of good feedback.

I like it. That's what a lot of bathrooms are like in Thailand.

My plumbing expert says to get radiant heat in the walls and floor. You also put a liner under the shower floor.

The design looks easy to clean.

is that you big bro?

I especially hate the dust getting on the bottom on my feet after my feet were wet...urgh.

but come on, the bathrooms we were forced to use were not like this chicago remodel.

I quite like open shower/wet room if it is designed right, and this one is done well considering the small space.

Thanks "Carina"! What did you end up doing? They are really negative there! Some useful points though. We only have a tiny amount of space and doing this will make it much more pleasant visually but it's interesting to read the pros and cons. Because of the layout I don't think we'll have issues with the toilet or sink getting wet. I liked the idea of raised wooden slats from Ikea too.
