My DS's report cards so far have been straight P's. Does that mean he got B's in all areas?
I always feel does pretty well in some areas like math. Maybe my standard is too low. |
I think that it's normal. If it makes you feel better, my 3rd grader has not received any ES grades this year and he was accepted to a highly gifted center. |
It does not mean he got Bs in all areas. It means he got Ps in all areas. Which means that he's proficient at doing/knowing what he's supposed to be able to do/know.
P = Meets the grade-level standard by demonstrating proficiency of the content or processes for the measurement topic See: http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/curriculum/2.0/reportcardfaq.aspx#4 |
It seems that as part of 2.0, ES is rare to nonexistent at least in some schools. |
In my opinion, a P is pretty much an "A" (3rd+).
It is very difficult to get an "ES" on a quiz for my 3rd grader, let alone for the entire quarter. Be happy for your child. My child once missed 1 question total on a 25 question math quiz, he'll get an "I" (or whatever it is - in progress) on that particular quiz. I thought the teacher's grade was harsh, but whatever. I know what he did and was proud of his work. |
My first grader only got ESs this past quarter in crazy things like Analyzing and Responding to Art, Performing Music, and Health-Enhancing Physical Fitness and Activity. First quarter she got 2 ESs: Movement Skills/Concepts and Personal/Social Responsibility.
This is a 6-year old who's reading at a 3rd grade level but only got a P in the reading skills. To say she lacks coordination is putting it so nicely that I actually went and asked the PE teacher what the heck her ESs there mean. He told me in the beginning, all the kids get them. This just confirmed my belief that the grading of 6-year olds is all a bunch of garbage. That was the moment I just decided to worry about her abilities both academic and social and let the Ps and ESs fall where they may. |
You're worried about BS grades given to your FIRST grader? |
No ESs here either. |
At least you get report cards.... How often do kindergarteners get them? I only received one so far. |
My kid has gotten all ESs on each report card all year. Still, I think it's rare. Ps are supposed to be the norm, but, sadly, that doesn't give parents much info. After all, if P is "what we're striving for" does that mean it is good or it is lacking (b/c it isn't an ES)? |
Welcome to average--I'm mean normal. |
Is this used in high schools as well? I'm so confused. If it is, how will colleges understand the grading if we can't? |
So much of money, effort and time was spent on such a BS grading system!!
I would like to have the following two things from the report card -- 1) Did the child score at least 70% in his grade's curriculum (corresponds to a C - I am not asking MCPS to aim very high) 2) Where does my kid stand in the class. Is he 1st out of 26 kids in his class? 15th? 26th? Then I want to know where he stands in his grade for the whole school- 1st? 50th? 100th? I do not mind any crazy alphabet, symbol, numbers they assign to this kind of information, I will learn to decode it!! But give me relevant info. |
Everyone gets "P", it's a useless grading scale. |
Nothing to strive for, 80% plus of students get P. |
