I'm being completely irrational about using a heating pad. Please help.

I came home from my embryo transfer and was feeling a bit achy and put a heating pad on my lower back for about 15 minutes. I then thought...I probably shouldn't be doing this. I then panicked and did what any nutcase does...immediately began googling. Dr. Google more or less said that raising core body temperature is the real issue and a heating pad was very unlikely to do this. But of course, I found some items saying you should NEVER, EVER use a heating pad.

My crazy brain has convinced myself that I've ruined all chances of this cycle working. I've scrambled my egg (now in the form of an embryo).

My rational brain is telling me that everything is fine.

Anyone done this before or have any rational voices to drown out my crazy one?

I hate this process. It really does turn me into an insane person.

There is a lot of body between your back and your uterus and I can't imagine the heating pad raised your body temp at all. This will not make or break your success!

I had the same freak out during my first IVF!! I think you're fine (it is indeed a core body temp issue)...but you may as well stop using one to keep yourself sane.

I have a bad, bad back. I use a heating pad every single night and have for the past 3-4 years. Literally, for hours every night. I have gotten pregnant 3 times and had 2 healthy kids (one early m/c). A heating pad on one area of your body does not raise your core body temperature. A very hot hot tub for an extended period of time could raise your core body temperature, or a fever. Not a heating pad. Don't worry.

If it makes you feel better, when I was doing IVF I went to a very fancy (and expensive) MD who also studied Eastern medicine and worked with Cornell's IVF clinic - he recommended putting a heating pad on your tummy to increase blood flow. I did it for my 4th cycle and got pregnant.

Omgosh! I’m one day past 5 day transfer and I have a horrible backache- so I placed a heating pad on my back for about 20 minutes- not even hot- just warm- then I switched sides- to my stomach due to some light achy cramping sensations I’m having- I hope I didn’t cook my kid- ????

If you are not sweating, you are fine.

I love hot baths and really really needed one during early pregnancy but I didn’t want to do anything that might injure my child — so I kept a thermometer with me when I took a bath. Unless you’re fully submerged in REALLY hot water, there’s no way your core temperature will hit dangerous levels. You can always use a thermometer to check if you accidentally do something you’re concerned raised your body temperature too much.

Good luck! I hope it all works out for you this time — it’s a scary time to have something you care about so much beyond your control. <3

I know you are responding re body temp but fertility clinics recommend against taking baths the week or so following a transfer.

I'm sure you're fine. There's a lot of insulation between your back and inside your uterus. As PPs have said, very hot baths for a long amount of time can raise your body temp, but I can't imagine the heating pad Ina small, localized area could do that.

I accidently put a heating pad on my stomach area (lots of layers of clothing on) for say at most an hour. Then i realized oh crap what am i doing. The area felt a little more than warm but hot. I’m a bit nervous. Anybody know if this is bad?

I went to a Chinese medicine doctor and acupuncturist for months before my transfer. Both recommended putting your feet in warm water and resting and eating only warming foods. You didn’t do anything wrong. Good luck!

Having your body in a relaxed state is helpful.

It’s not bad at all. You’re a bundle of nerves and full of hormones, so your panic is understandable, but the heating pad did not harm your embryo. Good luck!
