Bad reaction to Prednisone?

Anonymous
I recently took Prednisone for a bad rash (6-day taper-down dose pack) and handled it fine... but the day that I finished the pills I started getting racing heartbeat and feel a little hyper, a very unfamiliar feeling and pretty scary. Anybody else experience this AFTER finishing Prednisone dose? It's been a week since I took my last pill. I'm going to the doc on Friday just to check blood pressure, blood sugar, etc.
Thanks!

Still feeling that after a week? Then it isn't the prednisone. The taper pack dose is miniscule.

If it was just a few hrs a day or two later, then it could be the prednisone and I wouldn't worry about it.

My ex got dreadfully ill after stopping prednisone (the drug store didn't have his refill). I think the stuff is intense. Good luck at the doctor's.

My cat had a bad reaction on Prednisone. They gave it to her for asthma, but it seemed to make it worse.

A friend of mine took Prednisone, began having bad effects, so her doctor stopped it, but she continued to have panic attacks and mood swings for several weeks. Apparently if you have the right (or wrong as the case may be) brain chemistry, it can set off a reaction that doesn't stop when the medication stops.

I do want to add a bit - I'm a pp. Prednisone can also be a lifesaver. It is an amazing anti-inflammatory, and sometimes that's what a person needs to stay on their feet and out of the hospital.

Yes, the side effects can be severe, and it should not be abused. For probably ten years, I was perscribed a 14 day dose or so every year after a bad asthma attack or related problems. (The kind of attacks that took me to the ER). It makes me manic every time. I would still take it if needed.

As for the ex who couldn't find it at the pharmacy - don't go to that pharmacy ever again. The fact that they didn't call around and help make arrangements for him to get some elsewhere is horrifying. It isn't a secret that you can't go cold turkey. The shelf life is long and the stuff is dirt cheap. There's no excuse for a pharmacy running out.

This can even happen even with commonly prescribed antibiotics, which is why Cipro now has a black label, ruined a lot of ppls lives though. For some people commonly prescribed drugs can cause intense and life altering neurological damage.

OP are you having any joint, stomach, anxiety, or gastro intestinal problems? If so, don't let your doctor dismiss the steroid's effects.

OP here... Thanks everyone for the helpful info. Finally last night I felt like myself and I got a decent night's sleep. I think that my initial symptoms (anxiety, waking up with racing heartbeat) came from the Prednisone and then I became so fearful that it became a vicious cycle even after the medication left my system. The whole experience was very scary. I'm very relieved that the symptoms are finally gone. I will say that the Prednisone was the only thing that helped a terrible allergic reaction so it was a necessary evil.
