Christian Scientist Questions

Anonymous
It just hit me today as I was diving past a Christian Scientist Church that I have never met anyone who is actually a Christian Scientist...and yet most big cities/towns have churches and reading rooms (what are those?). Not judging, just sincerely curious and realized it is a religion that I no very little about (except that there are some celebrity followers).

Any Christian Scientists out there on DCUM who would be willing to answer questions about your beliefs?
Thanks.

bump

I am curious, too.

You piqued my interest and Wikipedia says fewer than 1100 members in the USA. But I am in NYC and see multiple churches in manhattan alone... What gives?

Oh wow. That was number of churches. My bad. Time to go to bed....

My only knowledge about Christian Scientists is they are the ones who refuse medical intervention when they or even their children have diseases. So, like, if they have a 4 yo with leukemia, they won't treat it. Back in the 1980s there were lots of news stories about court interventions in cases like this but I can't remember many incidents since.

Are Christian Scientists the same as Scientologists?

Not even close but people confuse the two all the time.

Apparently this is changing, and the "official" position is that Christian Science healing should be supplemental to medical treatment, not in place of it. There were some tragic deaths (and prosecutions, thankfully) up until the 1990s, when I think this new position started to come around.

Crazy 1 or crazy 2?

Has anyone ever met someone who is a Christian Scientist or a Scientologist?

I'm guessing both groups are pretty private and don't go door to door to recruit new members or even identify themselves in everyday conversation.

Yes, I grew up outside of St. Louis - there is a small town there (Principia) with a largeish Christian scientist population. We thought they were weird.

I wish everyone were like that!

Are you kidding? Scientologists recruit very aggressively. Never agree to take a "stress" test or a "personality" test.

Christian Science, not so much.

Interesting...never heard of the stress test or personality test you mention regarding Scientolgogy. Did they come to your door? Have you actually done it?
