NYC with 10 mo old--can it be done?

Anonymous
Thinking about a short visit to NYC with the baby (10 mos), mostly museums (he does those fine here), shopping etc. Pre-baby I took the subway or taxis, but I'm trying to imagine doing any of that with a stroller and maybe a car seat. Do you just walk everywhere? we're beyond the car seat that fits in the stroller. I'm not sure you can (or would want to) take a taxi without a car seat. And he's too heavy for the bjorn, so I really need a stroller. And I will be alone part of the time, so subway is probably too unmanageable.

Do you just wait until they are older? Or can it be done? and am I kidding myself that it is fair to the baby (he would have fun watching people and things)?

thanks in advance

You don't need a car seat in the taxi.

If you do this, I'd invest in a light baby stroller or be prepared to find all the elevators/escalators in the city!

you should put this same post on urbanbaby.com, the NYC version of this board.

personally, i would never get in a NY taxi with an infant in my arms and not a seat. i'd walk.

I've been taking dc every few months since 6 weeks old ... it's totally doable. I don't take a taxi unless I have a car seat - if you are flying, you'll be bringing one anyway for the plane and the ride to the city. But it's really not practical to use the car seat once in the city unless you are just going to a friend's place. You can also look into travel booster seats, they are $30. We try to stay in a central location, where we can walk to everyplace we want to go, and if anyone wants to see us they come to us.

And PS dc LOVES all the stimuli --people, lights, Times Square you name it!
