Hospital - Shady Grove or Holy Cross?

Anonymous
I am deciding on doctors and one thing I am realizing is that some docs only do deliveries at Shady Grove or Holy Cross. So, I thought I would narrow the list down by hospital.

The things I know is that SG just finished a new maternity wing.....
HC sees A LOT of deliveries....

Any thoughts?

I just went on a tour of Shady Grove yesterday and the mother & baby suites are nice. Maybe take a tour of both hospitals to get a better idea?

I can let you know in just a couple of weeks about my HC experience...I chose it over SG even though SG is closer to my house...I had heard good things about HC and the reviews of SG seemed less favorable although I can't remember specifics. Of course, now that SG has brand new suites, that might make things nicer. I toured HC recently and liked it. The rooms are all private and the place seemed clean, quiet, etc. They have a level 3 NICU which is a plus in case there is a need for intervention.

You may consider distance from your house...when I was looking for an OB it seemed harder to find ones that delivered at SG and I chose mostly based on doctor. Perhaps someone who delivered at SG since they opened the new suites can chime in and give a review...

From OP: I would love to hear what you (PP) have to say about your experience!

Thanks so much!

I delivered my 2 1/2 year old son at Holy Cross and did not have the best experience. The nurse I had when I first went in took an hour break and no one checked on me the whole time. What we did not know was that the baby's heart rate was dropping and the next thing I knew I had about a dozen people in the room saying I had to deliver now or have an emergency c-section. They had to resuscitate my son and it was a horrible experience. After the delivery, the rest of the stay was nice because we had our own room and my husband stayed the whole time. They even have it set up like hotel room service for ordering your food. My second experience there was even worse because I had to deliver a stillborn and the nurses almost completely ignored me until my husband yelled out in the hallway that I was bleeding a lot. The nurses there seriously need training.

I have friends who have delivered at Shady Grove before the new maternity suites were built and most said their experience was good with the exception of a few bad nurses, but I'm hearing that you can get that anywhere. Nurses are overworked and there seems to be a shortage.

I chose Shady Grove this time because it is closer to my home and because of my experiences with Holy Cross, I chose not to go there again. You will be probably hear good and bad about both hospitals, so the decision just depends on which doctor you choose and if you want to deliver closer to home. Good luck!

I didn't deliver at either one, but toured them both (the old SG).

Which one is closer to your house? Which doctor will be more convenient for you? Which doctor do you like better?

I would really make my decision based on those questions. If it were the old SG, I would say HC no questions asked. But since SG now has private rooms, are the differences between the hospitals that great?

One thing that turned me off from HC was that it was a baby factory. I wonder if SG will now also become a baby factory?
