Lactation Consultants

Anonymous
I am planning on breastfeeding my son when he arrives in December but I am concerned about not knowing what to do. I am just wondering if anyone knows of a good lactation consultant that does home visits??? I live in North Potomac.
Thanks!

PAT SHELLY
Breastfeeding Center on K street.
She'll come to you...give her a call now to set up.

Amazing.

I second the PP. Pat Shelley is the best in our area. She comes out any time of the day or night.

Pat Shelly is the one and only!!! Spend the money to have her come to you if you can, it's worth every penny!

Why not just take a Bfing class before the baby is born? It's probably cheaper than having an LC make a house call and you'll get a lot of information and questions answered.

Plus, most hospitals have LCs rotating through the post partem rooms making sure nursing is going ok. You can get a lot of help that way too.

Just a few thoughts...and if you are willing to come to Fairfax there is a great BFing center in Fairfax too.

Not the OP, but I have questions about this, too:
How much does it cost to have Pat come to your house? And it seems that I would wait to call her until I ran into problems - are you suggesting she wouldn't be available by then?
Thanks to the OP for starting this topic, and to all the replies.

I vote for taking a class first, too (I went to the one at the BF center). But, there's so much you can't know until you're actually DOING it, so I did have a lactation consultant come to the house too, the day after baby was born. (we birthed at Birthcare and so were home the same day) just to make sure we were on the right track. It was also nice to make contact w/ an LC early on, so that when we had questions later down the line (3m, 7m, and weaning at 1 year) we already had a connection with someone.

Take a class, see an LC in the hospital. Shady Grove has a breastfeeding support group every Wednesday at 2pm staffed by LC's--it's a great excuse to make you take a shower and get out. Also, in Germantown is Lynnette Hafken--she's an LC and LLL leader. She does home visits and she's great. She has a website www.nurslings.com.

I took BF'ing classes at the breadtfeeding center at k street before i had the baby, and then when things went wrong, i called pat. People with pricing questions, call the center.
