Do I apply for the CEO job?

Anonymous
I am happily employed PT WAH, albeit a little bored. I'm in that zone where I probably need to find another job, because this one is not challenging anymore. Except that I really REALLY enjoy the opportunity to be accessible to my kids and take care of issues at home. I've been on the hunt for a while, but nothing has come up either a) close enough to where I live or b) PT that would give me the flexibility I want.

Our CEO is leaving, and I've been asked by several people if I will apply. I have (most) of the experience they are looking for. The salary isn't great for the position, but it would be a stepping stone to something bigger eventually. The job is WAH, but has travel, of course. I don't know that I would get it, but I think I may have a shot.

My long term goal has always been for a #2 position (I'm just not into being a figurehead), and quite honestly, I've not pursued it because I just don't want to have to do the travel that would be associated with it at this time in my children's lives. DH travels a lot and works late many evenings. That won't change. And in some respects due to the nature of my work, I'm already tethered to my phone/tablet device, and a CEO position, I believe, would make it nearly impossible to shut them off.

I grew up the oldest of my siblings, cooking dinner every night, watching them after school until my parents came home. I'm not interested in that lifestyle for my kids. I want to be accessible to them and present. (Please don't take those comments as judgmental - that is not my intention at all.)

At the same time, I'm bored.

I am really torn over this. I know DH would like for me to apply. I don't think he understands my position. I think he just wants the additional income (BTW - we do just fine with his income - I could probably SAH if I wanted, but I don't want to.) His mom was home when he was a kid, so he doesn't understand it. He thinks we can hire a nanny and everything will be fine.

Anything I should be considering? Kids are young - toddler & elementary age.

Apply and decide later.

DH was a CEO before we had kids. Then, once our son was born, he realized that it wasn't the job he wanted. He was tethered to his phone when home, on the weekdays he saw DS in the morning before work and that was it, the weekends he was working from home a lot. Just not worth it even for the salary (which we didn't need or really want). At 6 months, DH decided it wasn't worth it and spoke to the President of his company and said he either had to make some changes or he was leaving. He stepped down to COO with a very minimal change in salary (we didn't have to change our lifestyle) and he is SOOOO much happier. They ended up branching the CEO position out to two positions because they couldn't find a candidate to commit to what was needed to do the job.

Absolutely apply. Tell everyone you're applying, have lots of ideas, ask them theirs too. Start acting like a manager and leader. Good luck!
