6 week RE ultrasound

Anonymous
I have my first ultrasound soon with the RE. I will be 6w0d and I am wondering what to expect. I assume they will look for the HB and a sac, but I have no idea if it's too early for them to find it or not. Also, I am planning to bring DH and I'm sort of wondering how the whole appointment will go with him. He has only come to consults with the RE, never to monitoring or other sonos. Just thought it might be a little awkward with the transvaginal ultrasound, etc. My DH is not the least bit weird about these types of things, and I'm a little surprised that I'm feeling a bit awkward about it! We had unexplained and this was a cycle off before starting new treatment, so we are extremely thrilled and surprised. Two betas have been good and now I am of course obsessing over the next step. Would be interested in hearing from others about your experience with those first couple of ultrasounds and what we can expect. Thank you!

You probably wont see a heart beat, just one ( or 2) sacs which they will measure. They will likely have you come back for another one to check for heart beat in a week or two. Its a little boring and a little exciting at the same time.

The RE will be looking for a sac and to see the flutter of HB. I had my first u/s at 6w3d. You may be a few days early but I think 6 weeks is usually when the RE wants to see you. Don't expect to hear the HB though, thats usually around 8 weeks. We transferred two and saw one HB and the sac of the other embryo that didn't really implant. As for your DH, you really should take him. They have a sheet over you so its not like he is up in the mix. And trust me, it only gets more nutty as the pregnancy progresses!! My husband is pretty stoic but teared up at both the 6 and 8 week u/s. Fertility is hard road and its good to celebrate every happy milestone, together!! Im sitting here pumping with my 12 week old daugher now. Good luck OP!!

Congratulations! Very exciting.

The u/s is just like the ones they do at monitoring.
At 6 weeks you will probably see a heartbeat.
I had my first at 5 weeks, and we saw a sac with a tiny dot in it. No fetal pole. My second, at 7 weeks, the baby had grown so much and we saw a nice heartbeat of 145.

Around 6 weeks, I think the heartbeat would be around 110.
You will have to wait until your betas are over 2000 before you can see anything though.

I don't think it's awkward having my DH there (except for wiping the goo out if me afterwards). Mine was much more interested in looking at the screen. Plus, they give you the paper drape to put over your legs.

Congrats, OP! This is such an exciting time. I had my ultrasound at 6 weeks 4 days and we were able to see a heartbeat. The ultrasound itself is just like a monitoring ultrasound. Your DH will sit up by your head so it won't be awkward and everyone will be focused on the screen. Enjoy!

At my 6 week ultrasound (Dr. Sacks), we saw two heartbeats. I had DH there and am so happy I did. I wanted him there either way. This way, we were able both see those little flutters and both got teary over it, but if we had bad news, I would have needed him there for comfort. And, really, there is nothing awkward about that ultrasound. Things with your body get way more awkward and graphic during pregnancy, so it's good to develop an open line of communication about these types of things.

I had my first ultrasound at 6w4d and saw a sac and yolk, but no HB. But not to worry -- I saw and heard the heartbeat at the next appt at 7w4d. Husband was there for both -- he's sort of a weirdo about this kind of stuff but he didnt have to see anything awkward. He just looked at the screen. (Of course, as a PP noted, he will have to get used to awkward body stuff as this pregnancy continues...) Dr. Sacks printed out a little sono pic for us. Amazing.

Good luck and CONGRATULATIONS, OP!!

OP here - THANK YOU all so much! I really appreciate hearing your stories. It's great to know that we may or may not see the HB. I'm just so nervous and waiting for the shoe to drop coming off of so many unsuccessful cycles. And yeah, I really don't know where this sudden last gasp of modesty is coming from and I totally get that this stuff is about to get real so might as well embrace the awkward. My DH will be totally fine and normal about whatever it is, which is one thing I love about him. And of course we both really need to be there for this big occassion. Wish us luck! And thanks again - love to hear from those who have btdt.

Congrats, OP!
My first sono I measured less than 5 weeks (it was 3+ weeks after transfer), and we saw one sac and yolk. No fetal pole, no HB. But a week later, I was measuring RIGHT on track, fetal pole, HB was measured (176). DH was there, has been for all three appointments so far (including my first OB one, but probably won't go from now on because leave is valuable, and I'd rather have him there after the baby is born). The ultrasound isn't icky for DH because there's a decent cover over me so he can't see much. Makes it less awkward!
If your baby doesn't measure where you think you are, DONT worry - I thought I'd measure 5w and change, but I didn't - however, it grew more than a week in the week between ultrasounds. The technition (GW) was great at showing us stuff. I cried at the HB (2nd ultrasound) because I'm a worry wart, and they were so sweet about it.

The worst part has always been the wait - and now, "graduated" to the OB, I have a MONTH between appointments and I'm trying not to go insane.
GOOD LUCK and keep us posted.

OP here - wanted to report back that we had the sono saw the sac and the yolk and a heartbeat of 112! I was 6w0d and measured at 6w1d. Such a huge relief! Thank you all so much for your replies and info. It was such a comfort and is so appreciated! I think I need to start a Nov thread now!

I always measured right on time, maybe even a little ahead. At 5w4d I was able to see everything, including a flicker. By your time OP I got a heartbeat as well - 119.

Wow to the person who had a heartbeat of 176 so early - didn't know that was normal so early. Usually they are at the lower end.
