I think that they could not have explained it better. Obama is the one that should be elected president of the United States.

I love how they close it:

But Mr. Obama's temperament is unlike anything we've seen on the national stage in many years. He is deliberate but not indecisive; eloquent but a master of substance and detail; preternaturally confident but eager to hear opposing points of view. He has inspired millions of voters of diverse ages and races, no small thing in our often divided and cynical country. We think he is the right man for a perilous moment.

I was so surprised!

Why is anyone surprised that the Post endorsed Obama? It seemed like the obvious choice to me, and they endorsed Kerry 4 years ago. I just thought it would be in the Sunday paper, where it usually is.

The reasons they give for having picked Obama are very clear. It is not a surprise that they endorse him ,but how they written so eloquently about him.

I don't think the PPs were surprised. More tongue-in-cheek posts, I think.

I thought the same thing. In fact, I am surprised they waited this long to state it.

Every time I picked up the paper there was nothing but ass-kissing Obama and then a maybe a litlte measly article on McCain a few pages over.

What a shocker!

True. It's quite striking. I am almost ready to drink the Kool-Aid after reading this and the feature on him today. Meaning, I have wanted him to win and to beat the Republican candidate but I didn't expect him to do anything I really wanted him to do after he is elected -- except not be George Bush or John McCain. But I find I'm starting to actually *believe* in him like he might be something truly special.

Must. Not. Get. Hopes. Up.

Let's wait and wait to see if they write that eloquently about him 20 years from now!

Yes, and make sure to read what's said about Bush in 20 years. It may surprise many, many DCUM posters.

Not a big surprise with the Post but wow...the Chicago Tribune and LA Times, two papers that never endorse a dem, have also endorsed Obama.

I don't know but I got goose bumps while reading this editorial. It certainly makes me hope....

Here is part of the Chicago Tribune's first ever endorsement of a Democrat for President:
Many Americans say they're uneasy about Obama. He's pretty new to them.

We can provide some assurance. We have known Obama since he entered politics a dozen years ago. We have watched him, worked with him, argued with him as he rose from an effective state senator to an inspiring U.S. senator to the Democratic Party's nominee for president.

We have tremendous confidence in his intellectual rigor, his moral compass and his ability to make sound, thoughtful, careful decisions. He is ready.

The change that Obama talks about so much is not simply a change in this policy or that one. It is not fundamentally about lobbyists or Washington insiders. Obama envisions a change in the way we deal with one another in politics and government. His opponents may say this is empty, abstract rhetoric. In fact, it is hard to imagine how we are going to deal with the grave domestic and foreign crises we face without an end to the savagery and a return to civility in politics.

And here is part of the LA Times editorial:
We need a leader who demonstrates thoughtful calm and grace under pressure, one not prone to volatile gesture or capricious pronouncement. We need a leader well-grounded in the intellectual and legal foundations of American freedom. Yet we ask that the same person also possess the spark and passion to inspire the best within us: creativity, generosity and a fierce defense of justice and liberty.

The Times without hesitation endorses Barack Obama for president.
