Help!!! Move to better elementary school or try to get into AAP such as young scholars...

Anonymous
Our elementary school is only 7 on greatschools.com. I am wondering if I need to move to be able to send my DD to a better elementary school. Or try to get her into young scholars program. Which option is better?
What is the best elementary school in West springfiel/burke area?
Any feedback will be appreciated. Thank you in advance!

I thought Young Scholars was for students "historically underrepresented" in gift programs. If you're not part of an underrepresented group , how would you even go about getting your child in?

Don't believe everything you read on GreatSchools. And Young Scholars IS a targeted program, so if you are part of the targeted grop, then you can participate (if invited by the school). Moving won't necessarily get you what you want either - every school has plusses and minuses. You need to see what works for your family and your child.

Why don't you post what your elementary school is first and whether it has any issues before thinking about moving?

You're going by what's on Great Schools? Seriously? I would hope that all parents trust their OWN judgment based on their own interactions in the school and how their child is doing in school--safe, happy, enjoys learning, etc., over some silly online rating with anonymous post by parents that date back years and years ago.

While it is intended for historically underrepresented groups, that's not how it is applied.

+1

Site-based management -- it depends upon the school principal.

Both of my white, Western-European-surname kids were in full-time Young Scholars classes for 1st and 2nd grades. And no, they are not FRM kids, either.

OP, are you zoned for Cardinal Forest ES?

What's wrong with a "7?" Seriously, OP and the rest of the PPs, there is nothing wrong with a 7 school. In fact, it might be better in that all the crazy Chicken Littles are running from it for the nearest 9 or 10, leaving the classrooms less crowded!

Not OP, but Eagle View is a 7 on there.

Hey, OP, thanks for fulfilling all the stereotypes I have of people closer in.

Our base school is "only a 6" on greatschools, while our AAP school is a 9. Honestly I adore our base school and will more than likely pull my AAP kid back to base next year.

A score on greatschools does not tell the entire story, just like a kids Cogat doesn't tell their entire story!

Thank you for all the comments. However, we are not famaliar with the school system here . How do I know if a school is good or not before my daughter get in? I don't like switching schools too often because kids like to be settled and happy in schools. Greatschool is my reference since we don't have relatives here. We also don't have friends with kids going to Cardinal either. What would be the best way to find out a school good or not?

Our school is Cardinal Forest. I guess I need to change my question to: Do you think Cardinal Forest is a good school?

Really? Some BS rating on the lame Greatschools web site has you in this much of a tizzy?

Yes. I think it is a very good school.

Why did you decide to live in that area if you thought that the school was so bad? I know a lot of people who love that area and that school.

In fact, I know people throughout Fairfax County who love their neighborhood "6" schools too!!!
