Regular Savings account to a 529?

For the last seven years I've been depositing money each month in a savings account that is in my son's name (and mine too)...considering this his college fund. Does anyone have insight on how and if I can transfer the money in this savings account into a 529? A google search provides tons of links and I'm wondering if anyone out there has the skinny on which resources are best to read.

You open up a 529 plan and you transfer the money using a check.
