We're going to St. Lucia later this spring with 7 y/o DD. I found a really cute suitcase on zulily that I know she would be excited about. But I'm guessing that it makes more sense to pack all of our things together and have one enormouse bag rather than have two smaller bags.
Thoughts? i guess I'm hoping someone will talk me out of buying this. It's so cute! http://www.zulily.com/p/20-pink-love-upright-with-spinner-wheels-45363-3174372.html |
If you (and she) love the bag and you can afford it, buy it. She can use it for other trips since it could easily be a carry -on, good for sleep away camp in the future, etc. I can understand your logic regarding the use of one larger bag, just be careful of weight limits since that could make it a much expensive trip than you anticipated. I'd also compare the baggage limits on the airline you are using. Perhaps it would make more sense for both of you to just travel with small carry-on suitcases and not even bother with checking in or paying for one large bag.
Better weight the one big bag to make sure it isn't over the weight limit. In that case, two bags would be better.
I'd pack two bags so you don't worry about going over the weight limit. Also, that bag screams "little girl" and she'll probably grow out if it pretty quickly. I'd get that for a 4 yr old, but not a 9 yr old.
Don't buy it.

That looks like a nice carry on size. Last year my then 3 and 5 year olds pulled their their own rolly bags stuffed with toys, pens, snacks and blankies through the airport and when they were checking in at our hotel. They got a lot of "How cute!" remarks and it certainly made it easier to get through the day. This bag is much more hip than their Disney princess/fairy ones!
Only thing with this bag is the protruding wheels, it's nice that they swivel but they can be a pain when you are carrying it by hand. |
Amazon has the same one for $10 less. Free shipping too.
I'd be concerned about it holding enough, unless you can pack lightly for your daughter.
They are headed to St. Lucia....not so hard to pack lightly! swimsuits, a few sundresses, sun hat, sandals and call it good.

And Amazon has better pictures, too. Plus more designs.

My daughter has a ladybug suitcase that she LOVES. When we travel (it's just the two of us), I put all my clothes and most of hers in one big suitcase that gets checked. Her suitcase is a carryon, and contains one change of clothes, coloring books and crayons, snacks, toys, my e-reader and phone charger, and anything else either of us need on board or at gates. I just carry my purse. That way, if she gets sick of pulling her ladybug, I won't be saddled with hers and mine both. However, she really loves pulling it. And packing it. And unpacking it. All-around excellent purchase.
