My DS is 11 months and got a stomach virus (likely rotavirus) about 2.5 weeks ago. My DH and I also got it, but we felt better within 48 hours.
When he was really sick, he mostly had diarrhea -- he only vomited a handful of times, mostly on the first day. The diarrhea lingered until about 1.5 weeks afterwards, and then he slowly started getting interested in eating again. His poops got firmer and less diarrhea-like but still seemed a little uncomfortable to him, and he seemed to have some gas still. He's been taking his bottle really well and is eating a TON of formula (like 40 oz a day!), but if he eats solids, he throws up. He never did this before the virus. The first time he threw up during the virus was after he ate a Cheerio. Now, he seems fine most of the day but not very interested in solids and cries if we put him in his highchair. Then he'll sometimes calm down and show a little interest in food, but if he eats more than a tiny bit, he throws up a few minutes later. Is this still the virus? Is it something to be worried about? Is there something he could have gotten that would cause this and might need antibiotics or something? |
| Call your ped. |
| Wow, this is funny bc my 10 month old has had the EXACT same thing happen. He threw up yesterday after a tiny piece of pear. This was after a week of no vomiting. Then he threw up again last night but was fine today, though not so interested in food. I have been worried and called the ped but they said it is likely still the virus lingering from 1.5 weeks ago. Your post actually makes me feel better because it literally sounds exactly like what is happening w my son. |
| When my DD was that young she had a nasty stomach virus, which seemed to reappear a couple of days after she recovered. The ped said that at that age, particularly with stomach viruses, they may not develop complete immunity and can reinfect themselves. Also, I just went to the doctor myself after 3 weeks of on/off diarrhea after recovering from a stomach bug. The doc said it sounded like the balance of bacteria had been thrown off and suggested that I could try probiotics. It's been a week w/o any dairrhea. |
| not "tonight" urgent, but i'd make an appointment w/ the ped in the AM since it's gone on so long |
| I'd call your pediatrician. Agree they may suggest probiotics. Does he still have diarrhea? My toddler is completely freaked out about throwing up and tends to keep doing so after being sick if she starts to cough a tiny bit, it seems like a reflex. |

Stomach viruses can be really tough to get rid of, as they can live on surfaces for a long time. My memory of having a similar incident with my first is it can take a long time for a baby to regain interest in food. So, you can probably wait it out. Take a break from the high chair and solids. Try again in a few days.
Good luck and I hope the ped is helpful! |

This is the OP. It's really helpful to hear that others have experienced similar things!
I talked to the ped today, and she said that it could just be lingering and that we should keep trying solids. My DS is also eating a ridiculous amount of formula right now, and she thought maybe that wasn't helping so suggested sandwiching solids in between -- a little formula, a small amount of solids, and then more formula. Hopefully that will help a little. He's in good spirits, which is great, but he's sleeping really badly right now, and I feel so bad for him when he throws up after finally committing to having a little food! |
