I am new to DC and about 23 weeks pregnant. I have had one appointment with a doctor at George Washington and she seems good (Wendi Monthy, anyone know anything about her?) but she works as part of a group of 8 so if I stick with her it is unlikely that she will be the one to actually deliver the baby - she only delivers on Wednesdays! I am looking for a doctor who will handle the prenatal care as well as the delivery. Does that still exist?? Any recommendations? |
I am going to Malcolm DeSouza. He is a solo practitioner who delivers at Sibley. I really like him and like the fact that he is solo -- I know he'll be with me through the prenatal period. The obvious drawback is that if I go into labor when he is not on call, he won't be delivering the baby. However, he tag teams with another solo. I will be meeting him at some point so I won't be completely surprised if Dr. DeSouza is not available.

Hi!
I'm 15 weeks pregnant and Dr. Wendi Monthy is currently my doctor. I searched around a lot for a female obgyn in Washington DC and I'm very pleased with Dr. Monthy. Prior to appointments I prepare a list of questions and she's extremely knowledgeable. Also, I found that it's easy to get appointments with her. I highly recommend her and have enjoyed our doctor-patient relationship so far. Hope this helps!! |
Dr. Susan Hurson is also a solo practitioner, delivering at Sibley. She is off most weekends, but otherwise, she delivers your baby. She's great. |
This doesn't really answer you question about having the same doc for prenatal care and delivery, but just wanted to let you know that I am happy with Dr. Monthy. She takes time to answer my questions and I never have to wait long for her. Good luck. |
I've been using Dr. Virginia Thompson at 2440 M St and really like her. She is a solo practicioner, so chances of her delivering my baby (due in 11 days!) are pretty high. She does all deliveries on weekdays, and rotates weekends with 2 other solos in the area, all who share her same philosophies on delivery (use of forceps, induction, epis, etc.) I really like the personal attention and the fact that I've seen the same doctor and nurse through my whole pregnancy.
Welcome to the area and good luck! |
A second vote for Dr. Thompson! I saw her throughout my pregnancy and she delivered my son just over a month ago. The receptionist and nurse are both fantastic, and I really clicked with Dr. Thompson right from the start. She is an excellent doctor, and I am so happy that I switched to her just before getting pregnant. DH and I are planning to move back to the west coast in the next few years, and I'm already thinking about trying for #2 so Dr. Thompson can deliver him/her before we go!

I tried Dr. Monthy a few times, and didn't like her at all. Perhaps you caught her on a good day, but in my experiences, she was always cold and brusque, and physically rougher than neccessary.
If you do stay with the GWU group, (and I understand the desire to have YOUR doctor at the delivery) try Dr. Marfori. She's fantastic. Fun, friendly, easy-going, and with a relatively gentle touch. Downside to GWU... awful time management. I've had to wait up to an hour past my appointment time there. They're apparently kind of notorious for it. |
