I took my 7yo dog for her annual today and the vet commented on tartar buildup. She doesn't need a cleaning right now, but vet said probably at some point soon.
I'd like to avoid this, because of the anesthesia and cost. I use PetzLife Oral Gel on her, and brush sometimes, but I'm pretty inconsistent about it because it is a PITA (not an excuse, I know). I will become more diligent about cleaning, but is there anything else I can do to work towards better dental health for my dog? |
What about getting chews or treats that help with teeth cleaning? And maybe encourage drinking lots of water--lots of exercise will help. |
Get some raw beef marrow bones. Not sure how big your dog is, but if large, make sure the bones are not too small. I give these to my dogs once a week and they have never had tartar problems.
However, make sure you do this in the morning in case she gets an upset tummy from not being used to raw food. They get used to it after a while. Best and cheapest option out there, and the dogs love it. |
You should be careful with that. I knew someone whose dog got sick because the bones got impacted inside of his stomach. I think they had to pump the dog's stomach. |
Our dog has tartar issues. I give him this oral spray and hard dental treats (long skinny stick ones) and it's helped. We still have to clean his teeth, but it's gotten us an extra year, probably, between cleanings. |
