Do you actually get physically sick from morning sickness?

Anonymous
I am blessed to be pregnant with #2, but this time around the morning sickness is really getting to me. I know and understand that nausea, queasiness, no appetite, fatigue, etc. are all part of it, but is it normal to actually vomit?

I am balancing the first trimester while taking care of a 16 mo. old and a geriatric dog. I used to simply dry heave when changing diapers, scooping out the dog food/giving him smelly medicine, cleaning up poop (from both the 2 legged and 4 legged "babies"), but now it has morphed into all out vomit. I can hardly prepare meals for my toddler without losing it.

My DH works late during the week and sorta helps on weekends, but in the mean time I continue to vomit. Is this normal? I don't remember it being this bad for #1.

Sorry, for the TMI.

yes, it's normal to actually vomit, although maybe not as much as you're expriencing. if you're not keeping anything down, talk to your doctor and you can get a prescription to help.

Goodness, this is completely normal! (Maybe not what you want to hear.)

I have a friend who carried a large cup with her all the time, as she would vomit, and then resume the conversation, preparation of meals, etc. It absolutely sucks, but normal.

I agree with the other PP. If you are not able to keep liquids or food down, AT ALL, you may need to see a doctor.

Good luck, and congrats on your pregnancy. People always said it is so worth it, but it is hard to remember that when you feel horrible.

I threw up or dry heaved anywhere from 5-15 times a day. I had to take RX meds to stop it because I couldn't function otherwise - ended up on IVs. The dr can really help if it gets bad. Lucky for me I really didn't have nausea - but on the other hand, that made the throwing up seem like it just came out of nowhere!

They also switched my prenatal vitamin to this new one called Premesis - has lots of B vitamins to help you with the nausea and vomiting.

I had the same problem - down to the old dog and a 17 mth old! I couldn't do anything without vomiting, it was awful. My OB told me to try ginger ( didn't work ), not taking my prenatal ( didn't work ), prescription ( didn't work ). Basically, the only thing that helped was to eat more often and things that actually smelled/tasted good. For me that meant a TON of bagels and spaghetti. My poor DH was so sick of noodles! Of course, it's sort of counter-intuitive, but it did help. Getting past it at 16 weeks finally helped too. Just know that it will end at some point and try and get fresh air when you are feeling really puky. Good luck and congrats on the pregnancy! One other thing to think about is that it is a positive thing that your hormones are strong and making you sick - my OB told me that. Sometimes I thought about how happy I was to actually be pregnant ( after a m/c in Jan ) and it helped get through the really bad days.

Agree with all pp's. I am pg with #2 and just like with #1 still vomiting several times a day. I was nausea and vomiting from wk6 until the day I delivered. With pg #2, it's been the exact same - I am currently 21 weeks and it shows no signs up letting up. However, this time I started Zofran much sooner. It doesn't always completely take away the nausea, but I usually don't throw up while taking it.

Last time I ended up in the hospital on IV's, so I am trying to avoid this if possible. I work f/t and have a 2.5 yo to chase around. DH also works late evernings, but I guess I am lucky that our 2 4-legged kids can get around on their own. Zofran is really a miracle drug, but it's really expensive (but worth it!!). Last time and at the ery beginning this time, people I work with just understood when I suddenly left a meeting or walked away mid-sentence to go to the bathroom and throw up. I just keep repeating to myself(like last time) it can only last 9 months!

thank you all.

I was reading some of the archived posts on morning sickness, but nobody ever mentioned actually vomiting and friends and family and the preg. #1 also never had vomiting so I appreciate knowing that is this is relatively normal.

1832 pp - Not that I'd wish this on anyone else, but it's frustrating when no one seems to truly understand or sympathize with how exhausting it really is. My SIL thinks she is sympathizing when she says she understands becuase that 1 week with each pg that she was a little nauseas was so horrible!!! Give me a freakin' break. Until you've puked out the side of your car door at a light or thrown up in a large planter outside an apt building while walking to lunch with your coworkers or carried plastic grocery bags at all times in case you cant' scope out a trash can soon enough I don't think anyone can truly sympathize.

Sorry for the slight rant......just so tired and I still have several months to go!

The vomitting is definitely normal. I've been told that morning sickness ends with most women some time during the 2nd trimester. I'm entering my 9th month and still get sick throughout the day once every week or so. It's better than a couple of months ago when I was sick every day.

Every woman and every pregnancy is different.

One thing that helped to settle my stomach (this is crazy but it worked) were bean burritos (no onions) from Taco Bell. Someone else had suggested it either on this site or another site and for whatever reason, I could usually keep them down. I felt horrible - there was a period of about 3 months were I literally had a bean burrito from TB every day - sometimes twice a day. My midwife and later an OB told me that at least I was getting good protein and during the 1st trimester especially it's just important to keep down what you can.

1832 again - I have to laugh at your post b/c my go-to food for both pg's has been tater-tots. Sometimes with a little cheese sprinkled on top. Not e best diet, but it filled me up and stayed down.

ha! Glad I'm not the only one that found a strange food (well, not necessarily strange - but not on the preferred diet list for pregnant women) that could be kept down! I quickly found out all my good intentions went out the window and I just had to find something I could keep in my stomach.
