KND at Sligo Creek Elementary

Anonymous
Hi there, I am looking to move to montgomery county and would prefer to be somewhere near Bethesda. I am considering Sligo Creek ES's French Immersion Program. I read about the horrible principle who doesn't listen to parents and doesn't take any steps to prevent bullying. It's 2013 now and I am not sure if the school still has the same principle everyone seemed to hated back in 2010. Any help would be highly appreciated. Other questions I have are-
Is there a lottery system to get into the French I program.
What are the other good Elementary schools around the area?
How is the Silver Spring IMS?

Same principal. Greatttttttt program. Just avoid the English administration entirely.

There is a lottery and the lottery form is due next month. I think that the odds are not great for getting a slot. There are several other good elementary schools in Silver Spring. Just search the archives of this site.

There will always be complaints about prinicipals. Just depends on how many parents you ask. We have been very happy at Sligo Creek. I have no complaints about any of my interactions with the prinicipal for the past 5 years. It is a great school and a fantastic immersion program. Please don't be scared away.

I wouldn't target one neighborhood on the small chance of getting into the immersion programs via the lottery.

11:42 Yes, there will always be complaints about principals. But b/c of special programs my kids have now been at three MCPS elementary schools, including Sligo Creek and been around four principals (principal change at one of our schools during my kids' tenure there).

The Sligo Creek principal is the only one of the four that I think does an unacceptable job. There are things that she said to me personally involving my children that were atrocious. I live in the neighborhood. Ask any parent who lives here who's had a child go through the school. Anyone who has had to deal with her will tell you horror stories. MCPS should put a new leader into that school.

French parents don't have the same dealings as those of us who live in the boundaries and for whom this is the home school.

BTW, I have talked with teachers there while waiting at the bus stop. Still seems that SCES has major resource constraints, particularly since the boundary change that shrank the school considerably.

To the question about other good elementary schools in the area, we are in the area of Highland View Elementary School and everyone RAVES about the school and its community. We LOVE our neighborhood for so many reasons and are thrilled that this is our home school.

Has anyone heard about any movement on the French Immersion wait list for this year? Our child has a very low number and we remain hopeful that she will get a place. Thanks for any insights!

Sligo Creek is a great school. I echo the previous poster who said she had no problems with the prinicipal. We have been at the school for 6 years. And yes, our kids are in immersion, but we still have the same amount contact with the principal as parents whose kids are not in immersion. The prinicipal has dealt appropriately over the years in my interactions with her about staff members, teasing from other kids, and lunchroom/recess behavior.

Highland View has an amazing principal and unbeatable community. We've been so happy there.

There is a lottery at Sligo. It's the only full french immersion as is Rock Creek Forest full Spanish. These wait lists numbers in the 100s. Your odds are very slim. There should be other reasons you want to move to the neighorhood and choose a back-up school you'll be happy attending. Sometimes people share information from years ago when some schools had in-boundary priority. The demand for immersion outstrips supply. The rules have changed, and it's all lottery. Teachers at the schools can't even get their own kids in the schools.

My son attended KG there last year (French immersion)--and I was prepared for this lady to be a shrew. She was absolutely fine, but then again I had little to do with her.

My DD went to Sligo back in 2005. Bullying was atrocious.

I have enrolled my son in a private school
for KND but am looking for good school in the Bethesda/Rockville area. Any thoughts on Ashburton elementary school? So hard to get information unless you talk to the parents. I was particularly concerned about teasing related to speech. I feel my son will be ok in Clarity by next year but it will be great to enroll him in a school which discourages bullying in general so that he is at neither end of it. I don't want to teach him that joining the crowd and teasing other kids is ok.
