Random Links in Threads?

Anonymous
Noticed this in the past few days. Some random words or combinations of words pop us as links in the middle of text within a post. It's kind of annoying because when I accidentally pull my marker across it, ads pop up. Not sure if this is something that is being tested, but it's kind of a nuisance... JMO, of course.

This is not something caused by DCUM. We would never use such advertising here. I would close the website down first. More than likely, you have something installed on your computer that is causing this. Can you tell me more about what the pop ups say? I Googled this issue and there are reports that it is associated with something called "Instant Savings" is there any chance the pop ups mentioned that?

The reports also said to check your add/remove programs control panel for something called PC SPEEDUP. If you see that, try to uninstall it.

Finally, try using DCUM with another browser. If you use IE, use Firefox, or vice versa. See if that causes the problem to go away. If so, the problem is limited to the one particular browser and you will have to troubleshoot that.

Thanks, Jeff - I appreciate that you took the time to look into this. As usual, you were right- it appears to have been something on my machine. It wasn't PCSPEEDUP, but something called CouponCompanion. After uninstalling it, the links are gone. For example, the word "close" in your PP appeared as a link and when I clicked on it, it took me to a random site for cirminal background checks. Weird. I downloaded a program called Doubletwist the other day (from CNet, so thought it was safe), but apparently this was one of the extra "goodies" that was included. Glad it was just me, and so glad you won't have to close the site down!

FYI, I had this a few months ago and asked Jeff the same question. His response was that it was my computer, and it WAS. I can't remember what obnoxious spyware I had, but it was something.

Mine showed up as something called the "whirly wide web".

Good times....
