So much discussion here about high paying jobs, biglaw, GS-15 etc., but I know that there have got to be quite a few people on DCUM who are currently unemployed or know someone who has been unemployed for either a long time or just recently laid off.
My DH was unemployed for a whole year, found a job 6 months ago...Im curious if you are unemployed, how long have you been unemployed? what kind of job are you looking for? |
| Bump. |
| DH ALMOST a year, but also wants to get into IT in some fashion... |
| I was underemployed for years after graduating w/ a Master's in education. Many school districts weren't hiring or had hiring freezes. I am still paying off the debts years later from that time. |

It was a few years ago but it took me about a year to find something good after my company went bankrupt, I was a mid level manager.
Did lots of crappy temp jobs and other things to help support the family til I was hired at an energy company. I'm not in management now but my company is doing very well and I am at about the same salary I was at previously, and much happier, it's a great fit for me. I have plenty of room to move up at this company and it's much more stable and employee-friendly compared to my old industry. |
| About a year unemployed but I consulted and actually did very well-it was the weeks between assignments that was the hard part. Just started a senior financial job-OK but not great salary excellent benefits except no 401(k) match and nice people so we'll see how it goes. |
| my husband has been unemployed for over a year. more like 2-3. he's been to a career counselor, been a finalist a few times, just never gotten the job. |
|
DH: a year and a half and maybe over today!
He has actually been verbally offered a job - offer letter should be emailed TODAY... but after a year and a half of ups and downs, I won't believe it until I see it. Or rather, I won't believe it until I see the money in the bank! |
Good Luck!!! let us know what happens. I know the feeling. after DH was unemployed for a year I literally fell to my knees when he got "the offer". that was 6 months ago...now we are steadily paying off the debt we racked up on our credit cards.
Im back to work FT too. |
Yay! Offer letter received! Still can't quite believe it, after all this time...
You're right, PP - no living wild straight away. Have to rebuild the little nest egg. |
| My DH has been underemployed for about 2 years. He's had interviews but nothing has panned out. He's been told that he is the top candidate but nothing happened. I thought the DC area was supposed to have plentiful jobs but it sure doesn't seem like it. |

Furloughed for 18 months, then laid off. (Didn't get a lot of sympathy from the DCUM crowd, which skews heavily fed... hmm.)
Was completely unemployed for a year almost to the day. Then took a part-time job in desperation, which turned full-time after a few months. So that was THREE YEARS of not bringing home what I think of as my full salary. Only now beginning to get back on track. Savings were almost completely depleted. |
|
PP - did you have to get into your reitrement or did you have enough saved up?
So many people on DCUm think this cant happen to them, but can and does. DH was a top exec when he lost his job. We had a contract on a house, had to pull out of that. The breaks were literally put on our lives for a year. |
awesome!!!! are you styaing in DC? |
| What fields are the long-term unemployed in? |
