Any Technical Writers Out There?

Anonymous
If so, I'd love to hear how your started. I realize the term covers a lot of territory. I'm a journalist/writer looking to become a technical writer. I'd need to start entry level, and mentor with either a project manager or lead writer.

TIA!

I got a job as a technical writer once! I was abroad, and all they wanted was someone good at English, so I didn't really have much competition. I don't know if my experience was typical for that kind of job. I did learn a lot about engineering by writing documents for the company, so it was more interesting than I thought it would be. I also was in charge of designing publications so I ended up learning a lot of stuff about photoshop and things I did not think would be included in that job. It was sort of a catch-all position that I was in, plus I was in another country, so I don't think it was a typical experience for that job. I also taught English classes for the employees! I forgot about that! Oh, and the CEO was really enamoured with me, lol. He thought I was the most awesome thing ever. Yeah, I didn't have a typical experience.

I got it through writing training docs and requirements for software implementations.
