| We just signed a lease for a place that has no pantry! As someone who grew up with them and have always had, I'm curious what others do. We are limited on cabinet space, but have a huge dining room. I was thinking maybe get an expedit from ikea and out baskets in it? Do I just suck it up and use the cabinets? |
| If you have the space for stand alone furniture, I would go with something with doors and not just open shelves. One, not everything is attractive and two can help stave off pests. |
| I keep long term storage items in the basement. Boxes of cereal, juice bottles, sodas, snack foods. |
Ditto. Baskets/bins collect dust and look tacky outside of preschool. |
| If you had the room, I'd go for something like the Billy Bookcase from ikea with doors. |
| Take as many dishes and glasses from the kitchen and put them in a buffet in the dining room. Use the cabines for food storage. If the buffet has wood doors you can move a lot of the larger cooking tools there too. |

The owner before us lined the basement steps with thin wire shelves on the wall. Works great for some things, but had we done it ourselves, I would have made more of them higher. We also have a large piece of furniture that I think is actually called a pantry at the bottom of the stairs (a few shelves plus two hanging baskets).. I tend to keep open things (cereal, an open box of pasta), spices, and common ingredients in the kitchen. Things I use a lot on the pantry shelves going down the stairs, and store all else in the basement. Not bad once you get used to it. Not as nice as a pantry of course, but it works well enough.
Also, I keep one row of the shelf on the stairs (one that is at the top) for items I buy that I know I will need that week for dinner. One lower row (where my son can reach) are things like apple sauce and fruit cups. |
| Use the cabinets. Get a china cabinet for the dining room, and put dishes in there. Store large pans in the oven. Don't keep so much food in reserve. We have stores. |
| Thanks! I think we are going to get an armoire or something and turn it into a stand alone unit. |
| For things like this, I search Pinterest for alternate ideas. |
| If all else fails, seriously consider downgrading how much stuff you have and need. We have no pantry, but lots of cabinets - but they are high, so I can't really use them. So I limit myself to having only the necessary mugs, glasses, plates, etc. Then I have one lower cabinet for food my kids can help themselves to for snacking, and 3 small cabinets for cans and pasta and stuff like that. I found that having less was SO freeing, and kept me from over buying just to fill the space. |

Same here - we just bought a place with no pantry.
I'm going to buy a bookshelf from Ikea - it comes with wall attaching brackets too for safety http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/83688210/#/13690607 |
