Has anyone tried Parkour?

I currently do Bikram yoga, weight training and cardio, but I'm really intrigued with Parkour. I find it a bit intimidating and I worry I'll be the only middle-aged mom doing it. Any advice?

Yeah, you'll probably be the only non-20-year-old-male doing it.

Not sure why a middle-aged mom would want to risk TBI and other serious injury just to get some exercise.

WHy not try something like kickboxing. Maybe you just need a little change.

Parkour is dangerous and you are not as young as you once were. Seriously, it is on hard surfaces and you won't love falling down a lot trying to master some silly move. I broke a limb doing something that can be dangerous but is far less silly than parkour and a lot of my family and friends told me I was super selfish to do that activity because I have kids and a family. For me, though, I was doing an activity I have done my whole life and love to do. You will feel like a total idiot with a broken leg or arm from doing parkour and you won't get sympathy. And yeah--you will look silly doing that with a bunch of kids of hipster wannabes.

OP, if you want to try it, try it. Don't listen to naysayers. If you hate it or get injured, you hate it or get injured.

Yes, I am 39 and it was a killer workout. Ignore the haters and rock on OP. Everything can be modified and you don't have to do flips bewteen buildings. Just be careful, try an introductory class. Second kickboxing idea, also a great workout. Also try P90x2 lotta core and medicine ball and funky pushups and pullups that might interest you.

urban evolution in alexandria has a 40+ class (comprised mostly of parents with kids in the class right before it) and it looks like everyone is having a good time. the age range is probably 35-50.

You could try an adult gymnastics class. At Dynamite, some of the instructors also teach "agility", which is really Parkour. And you won't be the only middle-aged mom there.

OP here - thank you to the posters who had something constructive to say. I appreciate your feedback. I think I'll give kickboxing a try. To the roller derby poster - that's awesome. I always wanted to do it mysef. To the other posters with the snarky, disparaging comments, why did you even feel the need to reply? Really. Are your lives so empty and devoid of any positive influences that you feel the need to discourage someone else's lust for life?

OP, good for you. To the poster who got injured doing something and was then told it was silly and selfish, here's my response:

It is ABSOLUTELY no sillier or more selfish than, say, being a man with dependents who has a heart attack at fifty due to a steady diet of office-ready food and sitting still for too many years, and I bet you NOBODY gives that guy grief.

I think people give grief all the time to overweight/out of shape people for the risk to their health. I think as long as you have dependents, it's something to consider.
