Hosting a parent social at DS's school and we need 2 cases of red and 2 white. What are some decent quality, inexpensive wines that are readily available by the case?
Thanks! |
| What do you consider inexpensive? If you're looking around $10/bottle, you can usually find Cupcake for that price. The red blend is pretty tasty, as is their Merlot. |

Spanish reds are always reliable as well as Chilean whites. I like Rioja from Spain and Chilean Chardonnay.
TotalWine has very good Italian Sangiovese reds (I think it's Il cannetto & il rosso label) & Italian piedmontese whites at inexpensive price points. |

Hogue Riesling is a crowd-pleaser and is about $10 -- cheaper by the case. Widely available. Same for Chateau St. Michelle, but I like Hogue a little better. Both also make a good Gewurtztraminer in the same price range if you want a little variety. These are fruity, refreshing, and not particularly high alcohol so nobody's going to get bombed.
On the red side, PP's Rioja suggestion is yummy, but reliable Rioja (LAN and Marques de Caceras are both widely available) starts at about 14 or 15 and goes up. If you want to stay around $10 or under, you can do anything from Cline, or Blackstone, or Big House Red (the budget label of Bonny Doon), or Red Truck (the budget label of Cline). Or find a Chilean Merlot, or an Argentinian Malbec. Don't feel like you need to buy Cabernet. Everyone's impressed by that word, but almost all $10 Cabernet sucks. Good Pinot Noir is also hard to find in that price range. |
| Las Hormigas Malbec is reasonably priced and good. |

Paul's in Friendship Heights has never let me down with reccomendations and they have a good selection at the $10-$15 price point, plus case discounts.
Like pp said, Cupcake is pretty good for the price and widely available. We've probably tried all of their varieties and like them. If you go to Trader Joe's - they'll open anything for a tasting. They've got some amazing deals, but you've gotta try it before buying in bulk. |
| Go for a Malbec for Red. PP's suggestion above is good; also Gaston is a great wine for 10 bucks. Rodman's is a good source as well. |
| God I hate Cupcake. |
