Freaked out about a 360 degree evaluation

Anonymous
I have been at my current job for 1+ yr and so far all is going well. I have been getting generally good feedback and, I think, performing well. Unfortunately, recently my supervisor shared someone's not so great impression of me. I appreciate that he shared the information and definitely will use it to improve myself. At the same time, he recommended that I do a 360 degree evaluation. Truthfully, that has me a bit freaked out! I don't like the idea of anonymous critcism. Arghhh! Any thoughts, suggestions, or words of advice to lessen my anxiety about this?

It kinda really sucks to receive criticism, but I think it's always an opportunity to learn ways to improve yourself. If the criticism you receive isn't constructive, just ignore it. Otherwise, take it as a chance to learn about ways to improve that you might not see from your vantage point.

This is the OP here. Thanks to the 00:10 poster. That actually is quite helpful. Trying to change my mindset about it and indeed use it as something constructive.

I agree, it can be very frustrating to get feedback that you feel for whatever reason is unjust. That said, it's important to be aware of the PERCEPTION of you at work, because sometime perception is reality.

I had a 360 review in one company I worked for where 1 person had it in for me, honestly. What was funny was, that when I did the 360 review, it was really obvious, because 7 people saw me as I saw myself, and the one person's answers just kept coming up the opposite again and again. It made me realize also that there will be difficult people at every job, and it's important to be able to deal with everyone, while also knowing how to take criticism, and learn from it, and what is real and what is garbage.

Don't worry too much about the 360 review. agree with PP that you will get through it!

I've had 2 different 360 reviews and both of them to be extremely helpful. Try to get a broad range of reviewers that you work with in different capacities if possible.

Everyone has skills that can be improved. The test just helps align what you think your strengths are with how other people see them.

360 are good when its the whole company. Aaah me loved the Booz Allen Kool Aid

have a friend that works at Bridgewater...one of the biggest hedge funds on the planet and 360 reviews there are brutal.

However, it keeps everyone on their 'a-game' and anyone can call out anyone at anytime..very 'flat' structure.

Sometimes 360 reviews can turn up positive things too that you didn't really think of.

OTOH, someone I hardly ever work with, but when we do it doesn't seem to go well, recently tagged me for a 360 review...
