I'm in between Generation X and the millennial so kind of a neutral party. But on behalf of millennials I am annoyed at my older (50 years old) co-worker's behavior. Calls in with minor ailments all the time, if something goes wrong, it needs to be an office-wide emergency (for example, she can't find her glasses or someone's phone number- she will send out an alert on the company listserv and yell from her office until everyone comes in to help), delegates all job responsibilities and does seemingly nothing. Comes in several hours late nearly every day. Sometimes makes up for this by working late after the rest of us have left but sends passive aggressive emails about how she is in the office working while the rest of us are off frolicking. The millennials by comparison are pretty good. Do the work they are given and don't complain. I feel bad that their generation gets a bad rap. It's like my co-worker got to her high level job and decided she's now the queen. It's really demoralizing for the office and not a good example.
Sorry just a vent, but also wanted to say it isn't always the millennials who are bad workers. |
| She's a baby boomer, not gen x. |
yeh, do not blame us Gen Xers
|
| Yep, not a gen Xer. Try again. |
| OP Here: Call it what you will I hope my point still comes across. However note that according to the Wikipedia article on Generation X, my 50 year old co-worker is in Generation X. I am too actually since it says people born from early 1960's to early 1980's. |
| 1965 is the beginning of X. She is the tail, last, bad, most horrible end of the boomers. This is why X is so bitter. |
| Explain to me why you would perceive this one woman's behavior as being representative of an entire generation? Is it not possible that she is just a slacker? |
OP Here. Oh my goodness. This got derailed. The point I am trying to make is that there is a lot out there (in blogs, in print, in conversations among employers) about the so-called millennial generation and the perception that they are entitled workers who don't appreciate what hard work truly is. I am not targeting my older co-worker's specific generation except to point out that whatever generation she is, she is decidedly not a millennial and yet has the attributes that are generally prescribed to millennials. Furthermore the millennials in my office do not meet the stereotype. And yes, she is a slacker and she is also not a millennial. |
Yeah, you didn't really make that point by talking about one person. |
| I work with alot of entitled Boomers and Xers who are lazy and have climbed up by delegating, but with little knowledge. Are there millenials like this? Yep, but the apples dont fall far from the tree. |
It IS a bitch being at the tail end of the Baby Boom. |
|
There are good and bad workers in all generations. I also think that all generations think the one below them is lazy and entitled.
|
Yeah, she is a jerk. That doesn't make the whole generation jerks. |
Pp here. Now I see your point. I think you flubbed the part where we all focus on your older boss but I really appreciate your standing up for the millennials! From a boomer who is the mom of a millennial. |
| typical entitled boomer who destroyed america for selfishness |
