W MV moving will CM stay in current facility?

Anonymous
Since MV is leaving the space will CM be able to expand into their area and stay at the location for at least 5 years?

That's the hope!

DCUM families, we need to start stepping up donations now - this is a very expensive building we have only been able to afford because of the CC subsidy.

What is the CC subsidy? Who can't afford what?

Is CM trying to fund raise on DCUM? Previous post is confusing.

CC = Cap City? I think I read in one of the threads about some funding partnership between them and Creative Minds...

Cap City subsidizes MV and CMs rent, because they had a lease on that space, but needed to move and finance new campus. MV and CM could not afford rent without subsidy as new schools.

Will CM stay? Or is it now too expensive?

We will need to work hard to help them be able to stay after CC's lease (and the CM sublease) runs out - to take over a whole building in that neighborhood is very expensive. If we have proven anything at CM, it's that parents can come together and support the mission of a new school and help it thrive!

When does the lease run out? It seems to me that the location is not ideal in terms of outdoor space. Why not find something else that is cheaper?

Finding something cheaper is much easier said than done...particularly if the charter school hopes to remain in the same Ward (which is typically the goal).

Another reality -- it's my understanding that DCPS has made clear that it does not plan to make all of its unused inventory (read: empty schools) available to charts...or at least not with long term contracts. DCPS doesn't want to give up its option of re-opening currently failing neighborhood schools, so, for many of its properties, it may give a 5 year contract to a charter, but it's not giving many long term (e.g., 30 year) contracts.

I'm not sure it is (or necessarily should be) the goal to remain in the same ward. It's just not realistic for schools as they grown to be able to afford giant buildings in Ward 1. And the need for charter schools is much higher in other wards. MV is pretty much moving 15 minutes away from their current campus - and all the parents do is bitch and moan about it. None of these parents would last one day in NYC or LA where long commutes are the norm...If you want CM to stay in their current location, then the parents/admin need to get focused on fund-raising...and quick.
