Just read a heartbreaking story of a mother who had negative results on maternit21 only to get the shock of her life when she delivered a baby with Down's. Just wondering if anyone else has had a false negative or knows someone who has. |
Where did you find this story and how legitimate do you think it is? I would think if you did a first trimester screen and then a test like maternit21, verify or whatever that this couldn't really happen or the odds would be so low like winning powerball or something. |
And that is why Maternit21 is considered a screening test and not a definitive yes or no test.
I made sure I got the M21 AND the NT and felt that based on the results of both of those tests, my odds were sufficiently low enough not to do any invasive testing like a CVS or Amnio that could give me a definitive yes or no answer. |
Probably babycenter - I read that thread. Search for "Mason's Mom" |
Please post link to the article. Thx |
OP here - yes it was on babycenter. God help that person if they were making something like that up which I don't think they were. Went into too much detail. I got the NT scan as well as did the Maternit21 bloodwork. My NT scan was normal so just waiting on the bloodwork. I think her nuchal fold measurement was like 2.7. She also said the baby passed even the 20 week ultrasound, showing no soft markers.
Don't have the link on hand but will try to provide it. |
I'm sorry but with a nuchal fold measurement of 2.7, she should have had the amnio and she should have done some research on the accuracy and newness of M21. It's awful for her, but she was very uninformed and got some bad advice. |
PP - one of the instances in which Maternit21 is recommended is for people who have a bad NT scan. So when her results came back negative from maternit21, I guess she did what many people would do and relied on that result. Coupled with a good 20 week ultrasound with no markers. I feel badly for her. |
Maternit21 is fairly new, unfortunately we will be hearing a lot more of these types of stories. And of course not everyone will put their story out there either. If you would definitely terminate for a positive trisomy result than I urge you to get a amnio or CVS for actual results based on the DNA of the fetus.
I am the proud Aunt of a niece with Down. My SIL passed the NT with flying colors, no soft markers on the 20 week ultrasound (done by a very expierienced Dr) and was 28 when she conceived. |
A woman who is in an internet group I'm part of (not babycenter) received a DS diagnosis at birth for one of her twins. She had had a negative Maternity21 screen. As far as I know she had not been told of any soft markers-the diagnosis was a complete surprise. |
MaterniT21 is not clinically validated for twins, so while they will do it, it may not be as accurate as for a singleton |
Well this is scary. My peri told me that materbit21 would give me more info than the regular 1st trimester blood screen. So I opted to do it. Guess I will be doing the quad screen at 16 weeks!!!!!! How frightening. |
I think it is, but it's still a screening and still only like 96% accurate instead of 85% (I just made up those numbers) |
I did the materniT21 screen, but my OB was really clear that it was only a screen--even a 99 percent accuracy rate means that it won't catch one out of a hundred. Because I was AMA, we did the screen, plus the regular blood screen, plus the NT and sonogram, which was enough confidence for me, but if you want definitive results, you have to do an amnio or CVS. |
Yes, this was exactly what my OB said to me, and how I relied on the NT and Maternit21 tests to make an informed decision about whether I wanted additional testing (I chose not to). |
