| I am a natural red head but the lower layers of hair have become very dark during the winter and my hair looks almost unnatural. I wanted to try henna for a natural product to make my hair more red. Thoughts? |

Ooooo, I am a redhead and tried henna. Terrible mistake. Turned out a really garish color and completely fried texture of my hair, turning it into a mass of dry straw.

My mother, who had beautiful salt and pepper hair at the time, attempted to dye her hair with henna for my wedding.
Big mistake. Big, big mistake. I would suggest trying it on a section of your hair that doesn't show and see if you like the result. It's not supposed to make a drastic change in your hair color. But sometimes it does. |

How old are you? Red is the hair color that fades most quickly.
I'm a natural redhead as well, and started coloring my hair when I was in my early 40s, because it had started to fade and look dark in odd ways (as you describe). You could also consider copper highlights. |

OP here. I am in my 20s, so I hope this is not due to aging!
I usually wear my hair pulled back in a pony tail so it looks fine, but if it's straight so the parts generally not exposed to the sun are showing, it looks patchy and dark. Ugh. Thanks for the advice. I might test a bit at the bottom and see how it goes... I was just looking for a red "wash" for my hair to brighten it up. |
| If the henna does change your hair color, it will turn a jaundiced yellow as it fades - many people in India use it and I've seen too many times the (awful) results of henna use on grey hair. It is a really good conditioner though, I've used it myself but then I have black hair. So definitely check on a small section of hair that doesn't show before you do the whole head. |

I love henna. It conditions my hair and my scalp is healthier.
OP, I think you might love it, too. It won't make your hair lighter than the current color. Check out http://www.hennaforhair.com for resources. |
