Keep in mind that it is going to be very hard to compare last year's CogAt scores to this years scores. Last year kids were given raw scores and this year kids were just given percentiles. Last year a 99% nationwide could have captured up to 8%-10% of Fairfax second graders (i.e. kids scoring anywhere in the mid to upper 90s this year would probably have scored somewhere in the 99th% nationwide last year). So if you see kids scoring 95% and getting rejected last year, that is not the same as getting a 95% this year and would not mean in any way that a 95% this year would not have a great chance of getting in. Without raw scores this year it is impossible to compare.

Not sure what OP trying to get out of this. Also keep in mind historically about 60-70% in-pool kids found eligible, so the rest of 30-40% in-pool kids were rejected, mostly because of low GBRS score/work sample/etc. Some of the parents appeal with new information (mostly WISC), and got in with high WISC. Some will try again the following years.
Maybe it's beneficial for the OP to share the purpose of the post, so ppl can answer your question?

PP here. I meant to say if you saw people posting that their 98% kids got rejected first round last year that doesn't mean a 98% this year wouldn't stand a great chance of getting in or even kids in the mid 90s or lower for that matter. I realize you directed your question at kids IN the pool last year so 98%/132 and higher on last year's test. Problem is that 98% captured a very wide group of Fairfax kids-- somewhere upwards of 15% of Fairfax kids scored higher than 98% nationally last year so it is impossible to tell -- without raw scores for comparison -- whether a 98% kid rejected last year was in the low or mid 80s locally or low 90s locally. You could maybe ballpark it by assuming a VQN of 132 last year was somewhere around 85% locally but even that is probably a big assumption and hard to estimate once you move up in raw scores. And of course without the GBRS info it would be even more difficult to compare the outcomes. THe NNAT scores would still be ok for comparing because both last year and this year were scored nationally and I think used the same 132 benchmark.

This is 3yrs ago. DC got 141 on NNAT and was in pool but didn't get in. CogAt scores for each section was in 120's. GBRS was 5. We didn't appeal. Grades were pretty much all O's.

3 years ago. DC had a 136 composite (I think) on Cogat, NNAT was lower (high teens or low 120's), GBRS 12. Was rejected. We got a WISC and DC had GAI of 129 (large spread so no FSIQ). Was accepted on appeal.

This is 3yrs ago. DC got 141 on NNAT and was in pool but didn't get in. CogAt scores for each section was in 120's. GBRS was 5. We didn't appeal. Grades were pretty much all O's.

Is your child still being challenged by the general ed curriculum?

Two years ago. NNAT 130 (in pool), CogAT 117 composite, GBRS 12. Rejected, appealed with WISC full scale 129, GAI 136. Accepted, doing well but not a super-star (top 1/2 of class).

just out of curiosity, how could you possibly know if your kid is in top 1/2 of class

Not the PP, but you can kind of tell. Your child figures out which groups are which (i.e. is he/she in the highest, middle, lowest math group, etc.). You also get a rough idea of what kids are doing. Your kids know and they tell you and you see work samples hanging in the hall, etc.

I don't know why DC got a 5; I didn't give it. I know the score because I asked to review the file after the rejection to see if we should appeal. But when I saw the GBRS, there didn't seem to be a point since no matter what the WISC, it wouldn't change the GBRS. I didn't ask nor did the GT specialist explain why the GBRS was so low. And honestly, I really didn't know or understand the process. I didn't know what I know now, which is that virtually everyone appeals (it seems). I know one thing that contributed to the low GBRS is that my DC is really really quiet, like pulling teeth quiet. So I understand the teacher's perspective. When you have 30 kids and you go to write up the GBRS, I'm sure it's impossible to think of anything to write about a child that has said nothing all year.

Schedule an appt to meet with your AART to discuss your child's file and GBRS. The comments should be really beneficial to you and give you some peace of mind.
