Infertility Support and Discussion
|
I was reading the previous topic, and someone mentioned that IUI success rates are only 8%??! Is that for everyone or only specific cases? We have a case of unexplained infertility, but I am relatively young... Our doctor wants to do IUI, but since my insurance does not cover the costs, I do not want to keep trying indefinitely and waste money.
So, my question is: how many IUI's should we try before going for IVF? |

I was told 8% success rate for IUI, but (I think) that was for IUI with clomid not injectibles. I can't remember the success rate for injectibles but I think it's higher. Here's an article I read a few months ago on whether or not to go straight to IVF: http://www.slate.com/id/2178377/
I am in a similar position to you (unexplained infertiliy, age 32, no infertility coverage) and we are leaning towards going straight to IVF. Our doctor did not tell us which option to choose, it pretty much just laid out our chances. It is a tough call. I am seeing Dr Frankfurter at GW, btw. |

The success rate of IUI depends a lot on your age because it mimics the natural pregnancy rate of a woman with no fertility issues. 8% is for women who are 40 or so (which was the age of the woman in the other topic I believe). Here is info on IUI from the Shady Grove website:
"For women up to the early 30s, the natural pregnancy rate is about 20 – 25% per cycle. This drops off significantly through the mid and later 30s; by the early 40s, the chance of pregnancy is about 5% per cycle. This age related decrease is primarily due to a decline in the quality of the eggs within the ovaries.[...] Ovulation induction or superovulation with IUI helps patients to achieve pregnancy rates closer to the natural per cycle chance of pregnancy for women in their age group who do not have infertility".
