Personally, I think that play therapy for a kid with chronic behavioral issues is of questionable utility. It's good for a young child who has experienced a traumatic event, e.g., divorce of parents, etc---but not for a kid who doesn't really think their behavior is a problem.
I would look to find a therapist who will work with both of you together--after all---you are with them all the time vs. a one hour a week therapy session. The therapist can help you in terms of finding better ways to respond to your kid's behavior in a way that will effectuate change. I have an extremely challenging adopted child and have joint therapy to be extremely helpful for me in terms of dealing with her.
