Introducing dairy back into your diet

Moms who BF and have LOs with milk protein allergy or intolerance: When did you introduce dairy back into your diet and did your LO have any problem?

I was off the dairy while my DD was between 2-6 months. My doc said they usual outgrow the milk problems around 6 months, so I tried some cheese a little after her 6 month birthday to see how it would go. We had no problems. I gradually worked my way up the dairy chain -- cheese, yogurt, milk and then ice cream. YUM!

thanks. did you then proceed giving yogurt and cheese to your little one with no problems?

It really depends on whether you have a diagnosed allergy or whether you have just noticed that your child is "fussy" when you have milk. If it is the former, you need the advice of your pediatrician or you risk making the problem worse. If it is the latter, experiment at 6 mos. Or if the latter, even experiment with small bits of cheese directly to her. But if it is an allergy, get your doctor's answer.

well, it was an unofficial diagnosis but pretty certain since DS had green mucousy stool with blood that went away when I stopped dairy and came back when I tried goat milk around 4 months. DS is now 9 months and the ped said I could go ahead and try it, but I'm just a little nervous so wanted to hear others' experiences.

So i guess I will go ahead with it, but if anyone else wants to respond with their experience to give me a little confidence that will be great!

You would be surprised how quickly (relatively speaking) babies' digestive systems can mature and become much more efficient and tolerant.

For us, I found that around the 5 mo. mark when I introduced solids to DS (and all went well) I felt brave enough to start eating my beloved favorite dairy items. I didn't totally over do it, but I would go slowly. As DS ate more solids then I ate more dairy and by 9 mo. it was all fine. He wasn't nursing as much at the point anyways.
