It's gross. Humongous middle-aged orange tabby drools when he's happy. And he's happy a LOT, especially when he's getting snuggles. We spoon in bed (he's the little spoon, although if I roll over, he will stretch out and try to play big spoon), and I wake up with a wet patch on my arm where his head is. Then I have to sponge off my arm in the middle of the night, because that's disgusting. Most of my paperbacks have mushy corners, because he rubs his face against the book while I'm reading.
I don't suppose there's any rare but easily-cured disorder that causes a cat to drool when he's purring and relaxed? And if not, you can just sympathize with me, and remind me how lucky I am to have the world's lovingest, laid-backest cat. He lets the kids dress him up and put him in a stroller, even though it takes both of them to lift him and he often ends up upside-down. He plays laser-pointer and feather-teaser with them for HOURS (by which I mean "minutes"-- it's all subjective). He sits on the wall in front of our house and talks to every person who passes close enough; if they hold still for a second, he rubs his face all over them, to share the orange-fur-and-drool joy. He is the perfect cat. Except for the drool. |
I can sympathize with you! Our male orange tabbly does it too! We call him The Original Dribble Puss! He will just DROP water when he's happy, purring, we're petting him, etc. There's not much you can do about it but just reach down and dry off the water drops on the floor (or wherever they land) that I know of. Hey, just enjoy your loving, laid-back cat! ![]() |
correction from above:
TABBY not TABBLY |
Ha! Dribble Puss. Has your cat always done this? I'd say mine only started in the last few years. Maybe around age 5 or 6. Or at least, it only became a regular thing thing. Before, it was occasional, in cases of extreme relaxation. |
Hmmmm, I am trying to think. . .ours is about 7 now and I"d say he started it in. . . .. like young cat adulthood??? So, maybe 2-3 or so??? I don't think he did it as a young kitten but more like maybe a few years after that?
We have two other cats and neither one of them does it, but I have talked to other cat owners and some have told me that theirs do it too. It seems just a few do. I guess we were just lucky to get some of the dribblier ones. ![]() |
PS PP back: I should add: we have our vet look at his teeth and his mouth at his annual check-ups, and then also do annual dental cleanings too, so we know there's no other mouth/dental problem going on. . . |
We have 2 droolers. I find it somewhat amusing. |
Since he's so laid back, can you put a bandanna on him? |
I like the way you think! But he'd need something more than a bib. He'd have to wear his bandana like an old west outlaw, over his mouth. And that might be a bit much, even for him. |
Aww, your cat sounds like a sweetie!
We had a female Calico that was a drooler with a huge overbite. She was the runt of the litter with every possible health problem but due to excellent vet care lived to 19. She used to lay in the crook of my arm in bed and kneed me and drool on me nearly every night. Kind of gross but I loved her. |
I have an orange tabby Maine Coon(he's Red in Maine Coon parlance). He has drooled since the day we got him at 12 weeks! |
and one of those Life Is Good t-shirts, too |
We also have a female tabby who drools over my husband , she owns him and when she smooches him she dribbles everywhere. |

we also have a female tabby and she owns my husband and when she smooches him she drools everywhere, we have 4 other cats , none of which drool, just her. |
