Unemployment audit

Anonymous
Been recording all my job search names and contact numbers for the last 2 months. Unfortunaely, my folder is missing. I forgot it at the library and when i checked they couldnt find it. I am very nervous. What if i get audited? Can someone tell me how the auditing works? Will they call me or have to go to their office with all my documents? Tia!

Translation: You've been stealing, now you are being audited and you want to know what to expect?

Ignore the ignorant pp.
I found the auditing to be a joke. The woman implied that as as a put together white lady, she believed me. I doubt they ever really follow up.

We're you emailing resumes? Then you will have some records.

Agree.

But OP shouldn't worry, it's the new American Value the last 4+ years.

Stealing what? I feel so sorry for you...I guess, you're having a bad day today. I pray that you learn to be a little bit kind to others. Try it, it doesnt cost anything.

Never been audited. Just reconstruct as much as you can from your email and phone records.

I'm sure you'll be fine. If you've saved cover letters electronically, that will also help you reconstruct what you sent when. Put together a list of what you applied for when for your own peace of mind. The odds of being audited are very small, and it sounds like you have electronic records of most of the jobs you applied for. The absolute worst case scenario is that you are audited, you can't show that you applied for at least two jobs on a couple of weeks, and you'll have to pay back a couple of weeks of benefits. I know that money's tight so that would hurt, but it's not like they're going to send you to jail. You'll be fine!

I do recommend sitting down ASAP and writing a timeline of your job search. Use your e-mail records and any memories you have of places you faxed applications to. Your computer's browser history might also contain the websites of companies you researched. Do this now, while your memories are at their freshest.

Cross posted with the pp, who said the same thing more artfully.

Rarely are folks audited. If you show in good faith you've been applying for jobs and can name some of the places you've applied to -- you'll be fine. I never even had to record where I was looking. Where do you live -- DC, VA or MD?

It actually doesn't matter where the OP lives, it's where her last job was--that's the state that administers her unemployment.
