Do most children who are in Chevy Chase Elementary stay through 6th grade or do some transfer to Westland for 6th? I was surprised to see the number of students enrolled in CCE drops in 6th and wondered if they opted to go to Westland early (if that's even an option) or if they went to private? TIA! |
There are fewer students in 6th grade because CCES houses the Highly Gifted Center, which only serves grades 4 and 5 (and brings kids from other schools). That is two classes per grade, or about 50 kids per grade, I think (but I'm new here, so can't swear to it!) The kids in the HGC who have other home schools will go to Westland with their home school classes. (I don't know if they have the option of staying at CCES for 6th) |
Also, some kids leave in 6th grade to go to Magnet programs |
The vast majority of kids who "leave" CCES in 6th grade are HGC kids who came from elementaries that normally feed into Pyle or Westland in 6th. The HGC kids are obliged to go back to their home schools at the end of 5th. I think the principal is open to considering/allowing students to stay for 6th if there is a good reason. But, most of the HGC kids have made really good friends with each other or miss their home school friends and are ready to move to MS. Only a very small number of kids for whom CCES is the homeschool elect to go to magnet middle school. The vast majority of CCES kids in the CCES district stay at CCES for 6th and then go to Westland. |
