Is 2.0 bad enough that I should move to DC instead of Bethesda?

All the chatter about 2.0 is scaring me (mom of preschoolers.) If you had a choice would you rather be in a JKLMM school than in MCPS because of 2.0??

No. I like 2.0

Have a great one, SEE YA!

No way. Not a chance. Seriously, talk to parents. Most of us love our kids' teachers and are pretty happy with our schools. The dislike of 2.0 on this board is present but is much less hysterical and isn't even a factor for most parents I know. BTW I know that parents love the JLKMM schools too, but Deal and Wilson are not on par with any of the middle/high schools in close-in MoCo, nor are any of the DC charter options. The only way I'd buy in NWDC would be if I was prepared to go private in later years - with all the headaches, uncertainty and costs that entails.

I really like the curriculum for the most part. I don't like the new report cards, and I don't like Starr though. But no, I would not buy in JKLMM over MCPS.

Thanks for the feedback - there is a lot of uproar!

Not so easy for me to answer. We were in DCPS and moved to MCPS so that oldest DC would have access to magnets/centers. At the time, it was clear that MCPS was superior in terms of GT/accelerated offerings, particularly in elementary.

Now, I can see that my youngest child will not have the acceleration opportunities that my oldest had, even though youngest is smarter at math.

For example, youngest will now only be able to get to Algebra in 8th grade in MCPS. However, if we go back to DCPS, youngest could have accelerated math so that he could do Algebra in 7th grade at Deal MS. Our old DCPS elementary now says that it differentiates, which it didn't do when we were there. I'm not sure what that means in the DCPS school, but since it is clear that MCPS is no longer differentiating at the elementary level (unless you get into an HGC), we will have to reconsider why we are in MoCo, as school was the only reason we moved.

If you want your kid to have GT options, I would move to another area.

If you think your kid will be average, you will be fine.

My kids are still in accelerated studies at MCPS, not HGC. My 1st grade daughter is in her own reading level, gettin books from the third grade class room. She received three ES's on her recent report card and her teacher was able to provide examples of how she earned that grade.

My fifth grader is in advanced Math & English. We sign up for his classes MS tomorrow. His advanced classes qualify him for further advanced classes, foreign language in the 6th grade, rather than 7th & 8th.

We moved from DC to MD for the schools. One of our kids is on the wave year, so she hits the 2.0 rollout every year. Its pretty bad on many levels. If I had known this was coming we would not have moved to MD. I'm really shocked at how many families in our neighborhood have put their kids into Kumon or other tutoring programs because of 2.0. I know four people who are planning on moving or going to private in the next year.

If your only reason for moving to MD is for the schools, they aren't as good as they used to be under the old system.

Actually they will offer a compacted math that will allow kids to take algebra in 7th.

It is very unclear right now how many kids will have access to this compacted 4/5/6 path. Some say it will only be kids in the HGCs, which would be far fewer than the number of kids who presently have access to Algebra in 9th. MCPS officials have said "few" will need acceleration under C2.0.

Yeah, when I was posting that like I was wondering the same thing. If its just the kids in the HGCs that's not much of a solution.
