Somehow I was under the impression if I got through the first year somehow, I will be slumbering for good 12 -13 hours. My DD is 13 months and sleeps only 10 hours and at most 11 hours. She goes to bed around 7:30-7:45 and is promptly up at 6 or 6:30. We usually work after she goes to bed so we are getting no more than 8 hours of sleep. Which doesn't sound bad, but I definitely feel like I need more.
Just curious as to how other babies are doing? Should I work on her sleeping more or is this the norm? |
| My 20 month old sleeps from 8:00pm - 7:00am and takes a 1-3 hour nap each afgternoon |
| My 12 month old goes to sleep at 7 and wakes up at 5:30. He still takes two naps a day - each one is roughly an hour or hour and a half. |
| My 16 month old goes down around 7:30 and sleeps until about 7:00. He just transitioned to one nap a day of about 2 hours. I try to get to bed by 10 so I can get about 8 hours - I can't remember the last time I slept 12-13 hours straight! |
our 13 month old goes to bed around 7:30 - 8PM and on a good day lets us sleep until 6AM (a bad day is 5AM). He takes one nap at the most an hour. And he is still up about 2 times in the night. It does make it hard to get a good nights sleep. On the weekends my husband and I have been known to resort to Rock Paper Scissors to decide who gets up with him

| Sounds like you are doing great, my almost 2 year old doesn't sleep that long. 8 PM bedtime and wakes up if we are lucky at 6 AM but often (and I mean VERY often) its 5 AM. |
| That sounds pretty normal to me. My almost 2-year old sleeps from about 7:30/8:00 until anywhere between 5:30 and 7:00. We're LUCKY if it's 7:00, but more often than not lately she's been waking between 5:45 and 6:15. And she only takes a 1-hour nap. I also hate to tell you this, but it lessens as time goes on. She used to sleep until 7:00 most mornings and take 2-hour naps, but that hasn't happened in a while. I read somewhere that the average toddler sleeps 10-13 hours a day. They are just like adults where some require more sleep than others. |
| My DS is 13 months and is on the same schedule as yours. |

my DS is 13 months....goes to bed at 7:30-8:00 every night, wakes once or twice (we do give baby a bottle or some comfort), and is up for the day around 5:00 (which actually works for us b/c we go to work early). but....there are many, many days when he's up at 4:00 and there is nothing you can do. he is ready to rock 'n' roll!
he naps very well....usually two naps for a total of 3 hours. DH and i swap nights for baby duty so i'm guaranteed at least a decent night's sleep every other night. can't say it's ever been more than 7 hours, though. |
| My 18 month was never a big sleeper. Goes to bed at 8:30pm and wakes around 7am. usually takes a 1.5 hour nap. We found out that if we keep her very active during the day - lots of running around, her nap can go as long as 3 hours!!! |
| MY 17 mo goes to bed at 8 (prob. falls asleep at 8:30 most nights though) and is up between 5:30 and 6:30. We've tried earlier and later bedtimes - it makes no difference. She takes one pm nap anywhere from 2-3 hrs. |
| My 22 mos DS sleeps 8:30pm to 6:00 am and takes 1 1/2 - 2 hr afternoon nap depending on how active his day was. Are you able to take a power snooze when he naps? |
| I think the Ferber book has some great information about sleep for children -- how much is needed, what is realistic to change and what isn't, and how you can make some adjustments...i.e. maybe you would be happier if your child went to bed a little later and slept a little late. Whether or not you want to follow his recommendations of how to "train" your child is up to you, but the biological information about sleep is very helpful, I thought. |

Our 22-month-old sleeps from around 8 p.m. (in bed by 7:30 but is often awake until 8) to around 6:15 a.m., with usually a 2 1/2-hour nap in the afternoon.

OP here. Wanted to share a tid bit of an update:
My husband and I went out last night and were out until 2:30. The thought of waking up for the baby around 6:30AM just about killed me. We tossed a coin and I lost, for who was going to handle DD when she wakes up so the other one can sleep in. Well, DD decided this time to wake up around 4:30. With two hours of sleep I groggily went into her room and cuddled with her into a futon mattress we have on the floor in her room. Well she tossed and turned for a good hour, and then went to sleep and didn't wake up until 8:30AM. I couldn't believe it. , I think I'm seriously considering this trick tomorrow morning. It's my husbands turn to manage her so I can sleep but I think I"ll ask him to cuddle with her and see if she sleeps more hours. This was a godsend surprise given our late night outing. Maybe it was a just a small present from her to us for only one night. Thought I share the success though. |
