Schools that are good for children with ADD

I would be interested in hearing any experiences - good or bad - with students with ADD. We are are relatively new to DC and considering St Pats and NPS, and are open to others (catholic schools included)

What do you mean "good for"? Do you mean which schools offer accommodations or which schools have comprehensive programs specifically geared toward those with learning differences?

Most schools these days offer accommodations (more time on tests, allowing calculators in math, sitting at the front of the class, etc).

Others that are known for more individualized attention to learning differences are:

Edmund Burke
Field School
The Lab School
The New School
Holy Trinity (offers accommodations and has tutoring program)

You left off The McLean School of Maryland which has been talked about quite a bit in the past couple of months.

Every private school in the area has students with ADD. Every. single. one. The question is what are your DC's issues, what kind of support does s/he need, how much flexibility and tolerance does his/her behavior require? The range of schools goes from Lab (specifically for kids with special needs) through McLean (offers some remediation) through Burke or Field (no remediation or varying the curriculum but supportive of kids trying to figure out how to be successful) to Sidwell or GDS (specific accommodations only). Each of these is good for some children with ADD, and terrible for others.

If you have a boy, I would also look at boys schools such as Mater Dei and Landon. As a PP mentioned, there will be kids with ADD at these schools, just like every other school.

True, but some schools really don't know how to handle children with ADHD, and the kids really suffer as a result.

I would avoid schools that are a little too stressful OP. Some of the coursework and course loads are so severe at some of the elite privates -- you'd be doing your kid a disservice to add that sort of pressure. I like many of the suggestions mentioned here.

Many ADD kids can handle coursework and course loads. Though I personally think it does a disservice to all kids to turn school into a sweatshop from MS on.

My god, in DC, NOVA, MD that is every 4th kid , and learning specialists and drugs have been provided to all, pick a school they all have the PC speak on this , and have hired the staff.

I would second McLean and perhaps smaller schools like Harbor if you are looking Maryland.
